The Urbanize L.A. article says that preserving the old Felix Chevrolet building on the site may stall the project. I hope not! The old 2 story building is not particularly distinguished looking or worthy of preservation in my opinion and this new tower is well designed. Not all old buildings are worth preserving. Of course spare the good, historic and beloved ones like the wonderful old buildings and theaters on Broadway and Spring and elsewhere downtown. But does anyone love the old Felix Chevrolet building so much that they would derail this tower? The old and the mediocre and the obsolete must not be the enemy of the new and well designed.

Thanks for the photo update pw. Like colemonkee says maybe the tower will start rising rapidly now that the base is in place. One floor a week...maybe top out early next year? This well designed 64 floor tower will have an impact.

I would normally agree and say demo 9/10 of the 1-2 story buildings like this in downtown, but this one in particular I actually think it’s worth keeping. I like the architectural style of the facade & it’s symmetry.

We're talking about the same building right?

It's pretty dull and not worth preservation imo. The history is neat, but that's about it. Not to mention it's just another unused block with roll-up doors. Waste of space as it is, and even if it was "renovated" it's nothing like many other gems around, would have to be left as a facade to something else, which really doesn't match with the vibe.

If anything, I expect there might be a few NIMBY from the neighboring condo that may try to bring up preservation in a last-ditch effort to save their views.

Totally agree....nothing worth preserving here. I don't see what all the fuss is about. The building is a squat eyesore in my opinion. The only thing worth preserving is the Felix the cat sign. I think the "preservationists" or view savers may lose this one hopefully.

Yeeeeeah, I was talking about the building sandwiched between the towers in the rendering... the building you have pictured here, totally needs to go.

Yea there was a presentation in the south park BID a few weeks back where they specifically called out preserving that small brick building in-between. It does have a nice look in the render. Not sure if they own it and are going to turn it into a plaza or they'll just leave it as-is. Right now I think there's a luxury watch showroom there.

If it's the red brick building, seems like they could build around it. Looks like a nice building.

DTLA’s most important redevelopment project (Broadway Trade Center) resolved its forclosure issue and has an extended development loan. They’re still trying to sell it though even while the redevelopment is continuing.

Also old news but Curtis Stone will open his new restaurant on the rooftop of the Trust building in exactly one year. His other restaurants have gotten good reviews from the food media sources that matter, but with varying levels of success.

Yeah, it's 1225 Grand, not the corner building pictured above (1201). 1225 Grand is an unreinforced masonry building (you could see the seismic through-bolts coming out the sides) and they usually just tear those down. "Preserving" it basically means tearing it down and rebuilding it, while keeping the facade intact. It really shouldn't hold up the project...

Apparently 1225 was to be preserved and 1201 was slated for demolition and that's what's potentially causing the delay. To me, neither building is all that remarkable and neither should hold up the project. Buildings of that vintage are a dime a dozen in DTLA.

The facade is nice though and worth keeping around, whoever designed it spent time on it. The streamline building on the corner can go and really shouldn't be controversial.

Also promising in terms of it actually happening "The Denver developer seeks to make over Los Angeles Cold Storage’s 7.6 acres for a project called Fourth & Central. It would be financed by private investment, Falcone said."
