My guess is that they anticipated BNSF leaving the area (which isn't happening) and the future availability of space for a yard in the area.
Note how the spur seems to curve to the north (but that could have been to avoid 901 GNW?).

City staff and Rapid Transit Project2000 have identified that there may be an issue with BNSF regarding the BNSF land immediately to the east of the Finning land between the Grandview Cut and Finning. Rapid Transit Project2000 will have to make suitable arrangements with BNSF for the use of that land, which may involve track relocation.

Seems like it will be horrible to be in that office building next to 901.

That's now a Discovery Parks building - it used to be QLT (with labs, etc.).
I think it's largely high tech now rather than biotech
- which is a good thing because trains running past would disrupt laboratories.

901 Great Northern Way was mentioned a couple days ago in a Daily Hive article about the neighboring former-MEC HQ building.

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/1077-great-northern-way-vancouver-south-flatz-mec
"For the next new construction phase of South Flatz, the developers have plans to build two new interconnected office buildings immediately to the west at 901 Great Northern Way, currently occupied by a two-storey industrial building that is used by Tesla as a vehicle pick-up hub. The plan is to construct a seven-storey and 11-storey building with a combined total area of about 344,000 sq ft of office space, also designed for large tech companies."

Which had a link to a Apr 2020 story about 901 GNW:

Oak-VGH Skytrain station - March 23rd 2021

Nearly two weeks ago, we happened to be near the intersection of Broadway & Laurel, and were able to capture a few photos of the preparations that will result in the new Oak-VGH Skytrain station.

Not the most recent photos, but I thought it was neat as it shows how the demolition progressed through the site.

Looking at these photos, I can picture in the next decade or so after the extension opens, a residential or commercial (or mixed) building to be built on top of it, like they did with King Edward station.

By the time we had reason to return a couple days later, enough time had gone by that we missed the demolition of the former home of Docuplex Graphic, who are now located just down the street.

A few more photos taken a couple days later on March 25th, which is a few days before the most recent shots found here

That was quick... all gone. 950 W Broadway is the next standing building in the block now.

It's definitely a question of "when," not "if."

And welcome to the forum.

whats the story with 1477 West Broadway ...... I thought the plan was once the Broadway plan was finished to go back and try for a residential component on top of the current office. I think in the 10 floor range.

still the plan or?

as in my opinion 1477 West Broadway is lacking so much density in its current proposal it makes me want to vomit for a site ABOVE a subway station.

this is a major fail of the current council IMO.

Eeyup. That or more offices. Your best bet is to wait until later in the year when the Plan is finalized; seeing as they haven't even finished the foundation yet, there's less than a 1% chance of being done before City Hall reapproves it.

Yeah, but not current office - above new office space.

Thanks.
The upturned ceiling at the corner improves it a bit, but still very boxy.

Nope. Walked by a couple hours ago. It's all boarded up and fenced off. The taggers have hit the buildings already though (looks like they hit all of Cambie Village this week, I noticed...)

Website says they started on April 6.

And the pain begins around Main Street with sewer/storm line relocations:

Broadway segment will happen on the weekend.
