I would argue that while sports teams do not have much of a measurable economic impact on a city, they can do wonders for the soul of the city. They can help induce pride and can improve peoples moods. People need a distraction. Sports teams can accomplish this in spades.

Sports teams can add prestige to a community too. Where do you think the term "major league city" came from????

One can argue the same thing about cultural and arts subsidies than what some say about sports. Note that I am actually more in favour of culture and arts subsidies than funding for pro sports stadiums.

Cool pic. I think that's the first time I've seen it in context as opposed to just a shot of the building itself. I think the design is pretty nice by junior standards (it probably has more glazing than all but a small handful of them), but at the same time the setting makes it look a bit like a big box store.

All in all though, it looks like it should be a nice place to catch a game. I'd definitely make the trip next time I'm in the NCR during hockey season.

Here's a Google 3D for more context. A major bus transit centre, some density, a movie theatre, performance theatre, a few cafes and restaurants, a Cegep and sports complex, along with Library and Archives preservation centres.

The new arena complex (below the white mid-rise office building surrounded by fields and parking), or preservation centre II (which will be a literal cube above the existing airport hanger style preservation centre), as not on the outdated Google image.

The whole area is poised to become a dense suburban town centre.

And for fun, here's the current Bob Guertin, which will should be demolished soon after the Gatineau Olympiques move to the Slush.

At the north-western end of the Island of Hull, it's near the traditional downtown but flanked by a highway and major arterial road.

Of course I'm a fan.

What I have a problem with is the concept of socializing the costs/losses but privatizing the gains.

These millionaire/billionaire owners can fund their stadiums on their own if they want to keep all the profits.

Leave my money out of it.

I don't give a hoot about people's mood. Besides, that argument is debatable. Montreal only has one team belonging to the big 3 leagues (NHL, MLB, NBA) and yet the pride/mood of the people here is no different than Toronto, a city with 3 teams.

Those towers off in the distance are actually in east end Ottawa.

The two right in the middle (one slightly shorter than the other) are at the corner of Montreal Rd. and St. Laurent Blvd.

Not very far as the crow flies but you have to go through downtown Hull and downtown Ottawa to drive there at the moment.

The closest expanse of white to the left of the big boxes is where a road leading to a new interprovincial bridge will be, if the bridge is ever built.

You can also make out the pointy west end of tree-covered Kettle Island, which is used as the unofficial name of the proposed bridge.

I walk and bike there fairly often. It's still got a lot of missing pieces but it's not at all an unpleasant place to be a non-motorist.

I used to live around there before the arena was built and spent a lot of time walking around there and going to the library. There are residential buildings in the area that have a bit of a European look with retail on ground level, including a Mocca Loca coffee shop. Having spent 30 years in Toronto, it felt like I was in a different country.

Montreal Alouttes embrace possibility of NFL games being played in CFL team's city

MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes are embracing the possibility of NFL games being played in their city, while the operators of Regina's Mosaic Stadium are leaving the door open to the scenario as well.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday the league has set its sights on playing in Canada as part of it expanding its regular season from 16 to 17 games. Starting in 2022, every franchise will play a game internationally at least once every eight years.

On Wednesday, operators of Montreal's Olympic Stadium and Vancouver's BC Place said in statements that they'd be interested in exploring opportunities to host NFL games.

The idea of an NFL game being played at Olympic Stadium is fine with the Alouettes, who play their home contests at Molson Stadium.

On Thursday, Regina Exhibition Association Limited, which runs Mosaic Stadium, released a statement saying it too could be interested in an NFL game.

The NFL says it will focus initially on playing games in Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Europe and South America.

This is exciting news. The Brandt Centre is a nice arena so I can appreciate why some might not want to get rid of it, but on the other hand one could say that Regina has outgrown it to some extent. It is a 1970s vintage building that is not downtown and not quite big enough to host the top tier events that go to SaskTel Centre as things stand.

A new venue in Regina would be a pretty good boost in terms of attracting events and also for the downtown area. It could fill up one of the empty spaces around downtown and pull people and businesses into that district. It could be quite an amenity.

I'd be curious to know how big of a size the developers would be looking at... I would imagine somewhere in the range of 10-12 thousand would be pretty good.

This proposal is not downtown but on the Exhibition grounds where Mosaic Stadium is located. Not too far from the current arena.

A little less exciting but still OK... I would love to see it go up along Broad and really shore that street up. Or is that totally off the table now?

More news out of Regina... a baseball stadium has been proposed for a site just north of the downtown railyards. This looks like a beauty of a ballpark, a 3,500 seat facility to replace Currie Field.

It's a pretty ambitious proposal considering the tenants, the Regina Red Sox of the WCBL, play a short season that averages about 32 home games including preseason and playoffs. My Winnipeg bias is showing but I think this would be an awesome opportunity for Regina to join Winnipeg and enter the American Association... AA teams play 50 home games plus preseason and playoffs.
