Really hope something is done and soon.
It started going downhill in 2014. Noticed it was getting worse between Drake to Georgia. Now it's just horrible throughout.

Our society is so fucked up when you justify giving free money, drugs and housing to notorious criminals that ruin the social fabric of our cities. I said in a previous post that the routine thing now seems to be those scum claiming first nations status which gives them more immunity.

There's nothing that can or will be done until we see a societal shift with more executive power handed to the authorities.

It's no surprise that Bonnis' 4? storey project (originally retail, then office) in the 900 block has faded away.

Does anyone know anyone who works at Deloitte? (temporarily in the old James Furniture / Tom Lee Building). That's assuming they're back in the office.

He stabbed random people including children.

It was only a matter of time before we saw more attacks against civilians. Poverty pimps should not be defending this

Considering it was basically done as an exercise to show that more height should be allowed by policy in order to achieve the density permitted, not really.

Given their new megaproject just one block up, can you blame them?

What's the connection with the DTES?

Yeah I read it and didn't see anything to connect the guy to the DTES either. Some of the comments are pretty bad too - more weapons doesn't make people safer but it will likely lead to more injuries / fatalities.

You been up to Lynn Valley recently? The guy I dub "Screamer John" who verbally shouts at passerbys at the corner of Granville and Dunsmuir was up in Lynn Canyon at times in 2020. These vagrants from the DTES are travelling around wreaking havoc on the region. This guy will likely have a connection to the DTES, just like the two guys who murdered that woman in Oakridge.

There's lots of people with severe mental conditions that live at home or float in and out of the DTES. I mean if you were going to bet money then if he hasn't spent time on the DTES that would be more surprising.

I have made a point of staying away from the DTES for most of the last year. I know from experience that if you dare to show up on East Hastings Street or anywhere in that area with a camera then you are inviting trouble, serious trouble. But, "DTES issues" continue to spread through the central business district, Yaletown, Downtown South, the West End and beyond.

When I was assaulted a while back on Davie Street I didn't really feel too seriously threatened because the guy was kind of small and pathetic and obviously mentally ill. He ended up running away from me.

Today was different. I came as close as ever to being seriously hurt by yet another crazed individual. This time he was younger and several inches taller than me.

I was on Seymour street across from the Bay trying to get pictures of 601 West Hastings. I would step out onto the street between parked cars to try to get the best view looking down the street. My camera was not in anybody's face. I really make a point of avoiding that kind of thing and will wait and wait and wait until I can get a shot without being in peoples' faces.

But, one crazy guy thought I was trying to take pictures of him and started yelling at me and came up and started saying he was going to kill me. He looked fully capable and willing to inflicit serious damage.

I did not say anything. I just stood there and looked him right in the eye. At one point he was inches away from my face screaming at me but I didn't budge. He starting going away.

I then lined up another shot and took it and that set him off again and he charged me. So, my sense of self preservation finally kicked in and I quickly moved out into the middle of Seymor Street stopping traffic.

This guy then proceeds to charge at me several times like he was going to nail me and then just stopped short. All this is going on in front of a couple lanes of stopped traffic on Seymour Street in the middle of a Saturday afternoon, horns honking.

Finally he went away and then I waved to the cars and went back onto the sidewalk and headed home. There were some people in front of the Dollarama that had been watching and one of them asked me if I was okay. I just said yeah and kept going.

On my do list for the next week, buy pepper spray.

Cool story bro. You know people who aren't poor can also have a really bad time finding out they have an undiagnosed mental health condition. There's a reasonable chance that's what this is, although I did hear that the perp had a record.

Oddly enough, the things that often make a person capable and especially clever can also make them more dangerous if their mental health ain't so great.

This fellow he slit his own wrist just before the cops took him down. He didn't look especially grubby and appeared to be wearing some chunky headphones around his neck. We'll probably hear about it soon.

Mcminsen's yet another scary incident (good to hear you're okay) is just confirming what was said only few posts before. People get jumped and almost beaten in broad daylight, yet it all goes unreported and hence not reflected in any crime stats. Does anyone really think that the same meth head doesn't go do the same to several people during the afternoon? It all goes unreported until he eventually goes overboard during one of his meth trips.

Today's North Vancouver episode is sure to have a connection to our drug catastrophe.

Next municipal election is going to be a single issue election and those candidates taking the hardest stance on this problem will be the most successful.

Finally a quote from a friend living in Downtown: "Wow yeah that's ridiculous. We witness robberies all the time. Our building has been broken into but they didn't get past the lobby --- Yeah London drugs and urban fare near us are constantly robbed. Seen best buy get robbed in broad daylight as well."

Vancouver, the most livable and greenest shithole in the world.

Oddly enough it's on my todo as well. It's certainly a downtown thing right now.

He was “known to police” so it’s not likely he’s some poor undiagnosed wayward soul. He’s somebody likely treated lightly by our useless justice system. Like many, I’m sick of hearing excuses being made for criminals.

Numerous people on twitter and reddit have commented on seeing the same guy harass and be aggressive in downtown and in front of the Lynn Valley library in recent weeks and now we find out he has a criminal record.

Alex Mackinnon seems to be downplaying it as a "non-DTES issue" or rushing to the conclusion that he didn't fit the mould of a bum and had mental health issues.

The reality is a girl in her 20's is now dead and a bunch of victims will undoubtedly have long-lasting mental and physical injuries, but the perpetrator will likely see limited jail time due to being in a "mental state." This highlights the need to incarcerate criminals and forcefully detox and rehabilitate those that are unfit to be tried.

Pertinent to the DTES:

In February, the Vancouver Park Board moved to clear half of the park from campers and begin remediating the site.

“I think when we look back on this we’ll probably see, I’m hoping, a turning point that recognizes that by providing folks with secure, dignified stable housing we’re saving ourselves a lot of money in the long-run,” Vancouver City Councillor and Strathcona resident Pete Fry told Global News.

“Because otherwise the cost, as we see in Oppenheimer Park — half a million dollars in remediation and the park still not — open we’re probably looking at twice that for Strathcona Park.

Is it at all strange that, as of this morning, this "suspect" has not had his name released to the public? Are they waiting for his designated excuser to arrive?

Again, use your "jump to conclusions mat" and you're probably going to look like a moron when the story comes out. 90% of the time anyways.

Don't get me wrong on the park encampment. I'm of the opinion that it's a colossal fuck up. It should never have been allowed to assemble. I've had 7 incidents this year involving theft, and another when I caught a fellow breaking into a neighbor's car and got them arrested. The neighborhood is basically getting pillaged and feels much less safe than it's felt in the decade Ive lived here. There should be a lot of asses in jail cells.

Random people people on the other hand don't tend just wander out to places like Lynn Valley unless there's a reason. Impoverished people in the dtes have less mobility than most. Every part of society has its percentage of crazies, serial killers, and generally terrible people. The ones who cant function or cover it up might end up in the ghettos, but thats certainly not all of them. You subsequently can't just blame all that terrible shit that happens on the dtes.

Regarding the murder in Oakridge, I'd bet money on those guys being used by someone else. The cop outfits scream premeditated intimidation, rather than robbery for supplying a drug habit. I wouldn't be at so surprised if those two were used by a dealer or someone who needed a favour and needed someone expendable.
