Has Irving ever mentioned plans for the Golden Ball? Could make a nice boutique hotel, apartments, or condos. If you 'pulled out' the ground floor and removed the planters, there would be a ton of street-facing commercial space available.

They still own poor 111 King East too- I wish they would part with it.

From what I understand they are in no hurry to repurpose it. You’ll notice they were doing brick work. This building has a lot of sentimental value to the family so I can’t see them letting it deteriorate

Maybe they’ll donate to UNBSJ like Scotia Bank donated their building on Kings Sq

Anything that gets us more UNB presence in the Uptown is good in my books.

That’s actually a really great idea, it’s close enough to the other two Uptown UNB buildings that it would add some consistency and the slightest glimmer of an urban campus

Imagining King's Square with SJTC, Imperial, 91 King, City Market, and UNB is...

In an ideal world UNB would fill the empty space at King's Square North, but at this point i'm entering fantasy territory.

Its noticeable from both the east and west side. Not a huge impact on the skyline as of yet but I suspect once the 7th floor is complete and all the siding is on it’ll stand out much more.

Also I’m hearing of a 180 unit housing development somewheres in the south end. Don’t have much details yet but it’s possible it might be linked to the Tin Can Beach discussion we had on here earlier.

UPDATE: It’s confirmed to be true, and a video with the developers will be posted soon.

So many surprises recently on this board. Who knows, maybe it’s a 22 story building similar to The Maple in Halifax at 222 Water St and Murder Hill lot

180 units is quite large by Uptown standards - Percy Wilbur was talking 90 units at the head of King last week - certainly something that would have a big footprint or be quite tall.

Yes, confirming this too. If it's the Tin Can site... that's brownfield isn't it? I know someone who approached the city over the parking lot between the white office building and the train tracks and they said it was a nightmare.

180 units couldn't go too many other places *in the south end*, other than...

-SE corner of Broad and Pitt
-Along Carmarthen between St James and Queen
-Victor Train's sprawling parking lot along Ross (I know he's open to all sorts of ventures)

It's crazy that south-of-Union could grow by like 15% between the last census and now. All this new construction is mirrored by tens of smaller renos, additions, and improvements. Only a matter of time before we start seeing demolish-to-build.

Trucks parked, brush cleared, and new plywood up in the ground floor windows at long-suffering 149 Broad St. Not sure if this is demo prep or if someone is taking a fifth kick at the can, but the property isn't in any recent city minutes.

Both sides of Sydney Street have different contaminant levels. Back when I was working on Tin Can Beach projects, the "snow dump" parking lot on the west side of the street was far worse than the open field which was purchased last year on the eastern side. Either way, development on the eastern side would be easier, given it is higher above sea level/not reclaimed land as well.

Pretty dramatically higher- like eight feet. Still, a footprint this large will require digging. Not sure if anything has been built here... ever. It was 'military grounds' as far back as like 1850.

The last time TCB came up here, the city told me they wanted the parking lot to the west of Sydney reserved for future industrial use- anything else was too close to rail lines, too contaminated, etc. We had wanted to build on it but walked away very early.

It is truly remarkable the amount of investment and growth happening uptown SJ right now. I am not sure we have ever seen anything like this in NB before.

A few years from now we may not recognize many parts of the Peninsula.

That ex army land by TCB isn’t actually very big. To fit 180 units they’d have to go tall but can’t on a concrete pad as required. Other areas could be Smythe St on harbour passage; former customs house lot on Water St; 222 Water St; King’s Sq North; parking lot of DOT on Charlotte St

it’s official - 300 Sydney St (TCB) is location of new large scale development - coming before PAC and council in April. Source - Amy Poffenroth of city (presentation to growth committee today). Also announced, the city is working with developers on 7 LARGE scale projects in the preliminary stage, not including already planned announced/unannounced projects. Appears city is on cusp of a boom.
