Seems like the building will be very tight to the crane when it gets to the top. They still have a couple level to go for the core. Hollow core is up to the 35th level right now.

It is amazing what having similar sized buildings around do to perceived height. This is the Claridge Icon in Ottawa and I believe it is 4 ft taller that 300 Main, so basically the same height, yet it towers much more than 300 does.

Mega City One. 800 million people living in the ruin of the old world and the mega structures of the new one. Only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: judges.

What's amazing is that thing didn't get nimby'd into a 4-strorey block. It's literally built beside SFH's.

Amazing really.

I doubt that could be pulled off in Winnipeg.

Osborne Village has some tall towers built a stone's throw away from single family homes, but that's about the only place in town where that's common.

Turning the Grace Hospital area & Henderson mini-clusters into full blown, Hong Kong-level density developments, would be nice. Highly possible as well - just level Perkins and replace it with some slim condos, replace the Woodhaven church with a nice big tower too, erase the mini-mall and throw in some mixed-use towers there as well, and maybe add some more density along Sturgeon Creek for good measure... as for Henderson, easy as pie, buy out the river lots and build towers en masse all along the river. Relocate small businesses into bases of said towers, ?!?!?!?!, profit.

Look I'm no NIMBY and frankly I like a lot of the idea of a mini cluster in the sturgeon area. But tearing down that church is a no go. It's one of the few legacy buildings in the area, plus it's actually kind of charming. Plus there's tons of developable lots in the area. Why would you tear the church down, of all things?

Doesn't? didn't? Ottawa have some sort of zoning rule that nothing could be built higher than the Parliament Building or was that just the city core?

Building location is definitely weird, it's like we have nowhere else to put it so we'll stick where no one will notice!

In Ottawa developments also have to go through review from the National Capital Commission. The NCC tends to be all about park land preservation and that sort of thing so it's extra amazing in that regard.

As to the building heights, I think that it depends on how far from the Peace Tower that any given development is. Post amalgamation Ottawa doesn't seem to have any issue with approving taller buildings, however, that's true. I'm guessing they did some sort of review of the height restrictions and made leeway for heights exceeding the Peace Tower.

That building stands out quite a bit in ottawa, i remember visiting last year and seeing it from pretty much anywhere in the city

It is isolated though, and the main downtown is a “small” downtown - even when compared to Winnipeg, due to the lack of height. Winnipeg may only have a few buildings taller than their tallest, but it does make an impact visually. Goes to show how a cluster can really impact a skyline.

Height doesnt matter for street level though.

Pre-covid though it was quite lively, dense and a fun downtown to hang out in especially during business hours. I found it to be better than larger downtowns due to the density and foot activity (although it was dead after hours)

We must be pretty close to top out level now. Just 2 or 3 floors to go?

Been a bit since I made an overlay image. Nearly to the top.

^ Cool... unlike when TD Centre barely surpassed the Richardson Building, this time it will be very clear that 300 Main is the tallest building in town.

3de14 do you have a clear readable copy of your overlay image so we can see what's going on at top of building?
