I don't think the Marlborough looks bad; to me it simply looks like two separate buildings. The worst example is the former Winnipeg Free Press Building; that is atrocious.

Replacing the parkade with a modern glass tower that would also extend over the Bay building could look very cool.

Beautiful plans,

....and the building would end up 1m to 1.5m sq ft. It seems to me that would be a rather tall order in terms of size for Winnipeg's market currently.

The best bet is to do as everyone has already said...donut it out and make it mixed use.

Main floor windows are now all boarded with plywood. Looks really depressing. Ghetto depressing.

Kinda sad, just down the street the richest man in Canada gets endless government cash and tax breaks for his profiting enterprises. While the 400 year old dying company that helped found this nation gets zero fucking help.

Don't forget the fact that said 400 year old company received plenty of governmental largesse over that timeframe... No point in pouring money into the endless sinkhole that passes for business in retail.

Very cool way to get rid of the worst part of that store and restore the rest to grandeur.

Now it may just be me and I apologize in advance but in image 2 all I see is the Michelin man using the Bay store as a commode. :

Still I like the project

HBC is pretty well being stripped for parts by Americans now, I wouldn't say that should be a priority for government assistance.

Really because up until 1870 HBC owned and governed over a third of what is now Canada. I think it’s the other way around. HBC gave a lot to Canada, maybe they should ask for it back. Lol. Canada’s preeminent retailer shouldn’t go out of business because of a poorly thought out European expansion. Pathetic that we will give millions to American car companies, and airlines, but do nothing to save our living history. People suck.

^ HBC was given just about every possible advantage that a business could have... it prospered for 300+ years. Nothing lasts forever, though.

I appreciate their role in Canadian history, but I would never shed a tear for HBC the business.

I definitely would...will just be replaced by an American chain....and there will literally be nowhere to buy a shirt in Winnipeg.

I'm not a protectionist by any means but it would seem that we should be at least somewhat self interested as Canadians and be interested in the success of Canadian enterprise over foreign enterprise? Idk, just seems like a logical move to make sure that our citizens are taken care of over foreign companies, or am I too regressive here...

HBC is primarily a land developer rather than a retailer - has been that way every since it was sold to American interests. Even longer I suppose given the land grant they were given. I think there is a future for traditional retailers - I hope HBC survives long enough to see it.

I'm so old I still assume "literally" still means "in a literal manner or sense/ exactly", thus I am left with an image of hundreds and thousands of "literally" shirtless Winnipeggers, and I am left saddened and disturbed.

Exactly this. The damage was done years ago. It has not been a Canadian-owned company since 2006! Ever since then it has been like Tim Hortons, i.e. a foreign company masquerading as a Canadian one.

Here's what Victoria did with its old HBC flagship (after it moved to the Victoria Eaton Centre, now Bay Centre).

https://www.buzzbuzzhome.com/ca/the-hudson#image-All-11

They hollowed out the middle to create a courtyard, built 152 lofts on the perimeter and opened 18,800 sf of street-level retail, anchored by the indoor Victoria Public Market.
