I am probably going way too far sharing this but heard it from someone who with others, are working on the design.I could not contain my exuberance hearing this.
If this comes to fruition, it is for certain on Smith Street and I think likely on the former Skycity site. That I can not say 100 % but when I tried to interrogate, it seems like that is where. At 50 floors, makes sense. Or very near that vicinity.
Once again, I am trying to share some positive news so please no pessimistic or negative comments. Once again, I can not say more than what I I have. It is now up to some of you to investigate & add to this.
I’ve done a bit of digging on this one. I hope to maybe know more tomorrow. I was told not likely the SkyCity site but they were unsure because they had thought that the site wasn’t sold yet. Listed, but not sold.

We will see. 50 storeys seemed high but you never know.

You're right, it does seem high. I think that's why were all hoping for it!

Also can we get Biff a title or something? Local hero maybe? Thx for looking into this!

Could "not the SkyCity site" be the St. Regis site?

There are still a lot of parking lots or heavily under utilized properties on Smith. If I could pick where this goes, my order would be:

1) THE TRIANGLE LOT! (It's a Smith address)
2) The lot(s) on the west side soon as you come off the Midtown bridge (could connect to the Donald side)
3) La Roca and adjoining surface lot (my pick for most likely as we love to tear down to rebuild here; also would make a full block of high rises with street front retail - crazy)
4) Lot south of 128 Smith
5) North of Holy Trinity (tear down clinic and build cross-block)

This is not including smaller lots that are unlikely for a project of this size.

Honestly - all these opportunities on Smith would have massive impacts. Building close to Broadway in general would be nice as it sounds like the city/BIZ/SSP are leaning to building up Broadway more for residential purposes. Coming off the bridge would fill in nice with all the old apartments there (and be a nicer welcome to downtown). Filling in lots by the arena is good. And the Triangle lot could be transformational and finally be the connector Downtown-Exchange needs... there's been a half-proposal there before, maybe it's not that crazy.

I was told Smith Street. When I asked if it was The former Sky City site, the reply was suggesting it could the former Sky City site or near there.

Has there ever even been anything publicly floated for the triangle site, like development proposals for the MTS and Hydro HQ and such? I don't seem to remember any. Whoever owns that lot seems content to just keep cashing the monthly parking income cheques as they have for going on 70 (!) years now since the church formerly on that site was demolished.

A big Hank Scorpio statue for no apparent reason would put Winnipeg on the map. Suck it, Gladstone.

There just isn't any pressure to build there right now. I think that might change in the next 5 to 10 years.

There are plans a foot for some large residential conversions/expansions in the vicinity.
