But I get it - unless it's in bad disrepair, it may not be worth the price tag to build new. There's significant competition, though, in Embassy Suites, and in other hotels coming to Downtown (Alamite to have conference space as well, I believe).

Oh ok, I see what you're saying now. I'm only familiar to a certain extent with the conference center, so I don't know how the sidewalks between it and the hotel match up with the exhibition halls and other facilities. So, you may be right, it may not work to just slap a roof over the paths between buildings.

Nice!

Y'know, I've always seen UA, UAB, and UAH as the three parts of a great whole. UA is the jack of all trades, UAH is the engineering school, UAB is the med school. While I'm very happy to see progress for UA's engineering school, I really hope this doesn't eat into UAH's engineering clout.

I don't think you have to worry about that. UAH is still top notch reputation wise especially in Huntsville. UA, on the other hand, is making a brand name all over the country. As much as I would love to see more UA grads here in Huntsville, i think it's equally or more important for our reputation to have a brand name all over the country.

I think you're right. I guess I just have a wish for UAB and UAH too much flagship quality instituions. In all hounesty, I think both Universities have already achieved that status in the realms of engineering and medicine.

I think what might be a good course of action to take (similar to what UAB has done) is to form strong partnerships with the other member institutions in the system.

If you attend the A-Day game, check out the new "Tuska Plaza" on University Blvd and Wallace Wade Dr, on the Northwest corner of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The statue is being relocated from the North River Yacht Club and should be in place by April 12th.

For those unfamiliar, "Tuska" is the bastardized version of "tạshka", which is "warrior" in Choctaw. Tuscaloosa essentially translates to Black Warrior.

It's really nice to see something being done with the large grassy plaza that was left after the demolition of the two fraternity houses. This will be a cool place to people to gather and get photos made before games and other events. I suspect a large diagonal sidewalk to eventually connect the statue and the stadium. Maybe, even other sidewalks strategically added.

Didn't someone on the forum mention at one time that there was some poposal to place a new museum between this corner and the stadium? Maybe one to replace the Bryant Museum? (kinda needs as proper replacement... very cramped and unworthy structure)

I may have mentioned once that I thought this would be a great place to relocate Bryant Museum, but certainly nothing was ever planned as far as I know. It would have been ideal, though.

This would be a huge mistake by the University. Plenty of other areas to house Senator Shelby's papers. Ever heard of the Hoole Special Collections Library?

I agree but don't expect this Board to give a damn what you think. UA's main problem is self satisfied administrators who think they don't need your input.

It really is an ideal location. Throw a SUPe store annex, weekend use bathrooms, and a special collection to enhance the library system.

I agree with you. Also, student awards, like Rhodes Scholars, Goldwater Scholars, Truman Scholars, Marshall Scholar, etc. But, unfortunately, Alabama will always have to fight the "football school" "Southern Public school" perception. But, when we recruit students, you can bet that they get the "Correct" information and lots of it. Just keep winning, baby!!! RTR

Actually, this building already exists and is currently being fully renovated. There are two buildings on the old Bryce property north of the old hospital that are mirror images of each other. The building on the east side has been refurbished and converted into Cyber Hall to house the new Cyber Security program that was initiated a couple of years ago in the Engineering school. The building to the west is the building shown here and is now named the Alabama Transportation Center. I think this, along with the Cyber security program, is a huge step forward for expanding the University's research. It will bring in more faculty and create more quality jobs. It will also make UA a more visible player as a high tech research university.
