Yes we will, plus there will be a pathway connection to Bridle Path (just south of the Hunt Club Loop bus stops).

Connectivity to the east will still be a challenge though- we need a MUP along Dazé and improvements at Bank/Dazé/Cahill.

Great idea. Is there a plan for a MUP bridge over Moodie?

This is the plan for Moodie so far.

Planned

A. Controlled pedestrian crossing and sidewalk across Corkstown at station entry

B. Station plaza with two passenger pick up and drop off spaces and bike parking for 30 bikes with space allocated to double in future when required

C. Multi-use pathway from station entrance to Moodie Drive and Corkstown Road intersection via the north side of Corkstown Road

D. Sidewalk on west side of Moodie Highway 417 Bridge from Corkstown Road to the eastbound Highway 417 off-ramp

Feasibility Assessment

E. Continue multi-use pathway connection along west side of Moodie Drive into Bells Corners

F. Upgrade sidewalk to multi-use pathway along west side of Moodie Drive Bridge from Corkstown Road to the eastbound Highway 417 off-ramp

Will be interesting to see how much they are used. I personally think South Keys would make a better station to have this at than Greenboro, since there are better bike path connections to South Keys, including the Juno Beach Bridge.
The issue at South Keys is that there is very little space outside the station. It would have been better integrated into the new station.

Anyone know which O-Train station I can find the fare gate which has the contactless payment feature installed? OCT had mentioned that one would be installed by the end of 2020 as part of the testing phase.

Ottawa Transit App
@TransitOttawa

Hello #Ottawa,
@OC_Transpo
proposed new changes to their live data API will impact your app experience! Starting March 1st, you will no longer be able to determine if the bus is double decker, has a bike rack or is accessible.

You will also lose the ability to determine if the bus is late, early or on-time. These features have been an important part of the app and users depend on these attributes to make an informed decision when planning their travel.

It'll still tell you where the bus is, and the estimated time of arrival.. and contrary to the second tweet it will still be possible to determine if a bus is early/on-time/late, the developer just isn't interested in carrying out the relatively minimal amount of effort to do so.

It’s not minimal, it is possible but it takes more time to program and more server resources.

I honestly am still wondering why they haven’t updated to GTFS-real-time yet. It would mean instant support for Apple and Google maps, and other transit applications.

It is still relatively minimal in the grand scheme of things and I'm honestly a little surprised that app isn't set up in a way that makes that easily doable, but either way it seems like that tweet made a lot of people think that GPS times were being removed altogether which isn't the case at all.

It shouldn't be up to the developer to rework their program to accomodate OC Transpo's restrictive data when every other city in North America just provides the developer with all the data they want.

Technically that information was never publicly available to begin with (directly from OC Transpo anyway).
I've seen some people speculate wildly about OC Transpo wanting to suppress information about how many buses are late and all that which is wrong both because it's a) still possible, and b) because no one was using this app to gather that info in the first place.

I wish OC Transpo would just support GTFS-rt (and like CyrusKafaiwu I wonder why they haven't) and that they would dump all the data possible into the API, but to me this is another case of a story being overblown because people don't really seem to understand what's happening...

The optimist in me wonders if these changes (especially because of the 'indefinite' removal of the bus type) are because of changes 'behind the scenes' that will ultimately lead to GTFS-rt... because even the newest version of their API is running on software that was end-of-life'd over 2 years ago now.

Sorry for the late reply. Only just catching up.

Where did you read that the charging rate would be lower? Typically larger batteries are able to charge at a higher maximum rate. What confuses people is that since they are bigger, it would take more time to get it to 100%, but you don't need to recharge it back to 100% during the day. All you need is to keep adding enough charge to allow it to keep running for its entire shift. As a result, a bus with a longer range will gain as much if not more range in the same amount of dwell time as a bus with a smaller range.

My guess is, they want buses that could be used on any route. That was the big problem with the hybrids is that they were only good on the local routes, but they couldn't guarantee that they would always be on local routes. For this reason I expect OC Transpo will only buy long range buses until the charging infrastructure on their network is so ubiquitous that they any route could use a short range bus.

OC Transpo tweeted out this thread regarding the changes to the API:
https://twitter.com/OC_Transpo/status/1356377539732713478

Seems like the intention is/was to have the bus type included in version 2.0? Keep in mind that the "[temporary] removal" of the bus type information was first announced to developers at the start of November, back when 2.0 was still in testing, but according to what they've sent out to developers 2.0 is supposed to be production-ready as of 3 days ago...

Either way, I kind of figured they were doing a migration behind the scenes. This gives me a little more hope we'll see an actual improvement to the API itself in the future...

Edit: They say it'll be back in 4-6 weeks.

Edit edit: GTFS-rt is "in the pipes" — https://twitter.com/OC_Transpo/status/1356402587466166273

Ottawa is already well set-up to move away from Presto should the need arise. Since they own their own equipment, they can move to an alternate provider easily, and already do support their own far-card system for internal and special uses.

Unless Metrolinx decides to play hardball and charge unreasonable fees, there is no reason why OC Transpo couldn't continue to support Presto in perpetuity as an alternate payment option, while migrating to a payment system shared with STO for improved integration.

Bikes, e-scooters could be permanent fixtures on city's trains: report
No complaints about bikes on LRT since line launched in 2019

CBC News · Posted: Feb 12, 2021 4:00 AM ET | Last Updated: 4 hours ago

A local cycling advocacy group is lauding a plan to permanently allow bikes and e-scooters on Ottawa's two commuter rail lines.

Next week, transit commission will be asked to enshrine cyclists' rights to stash their bikes on the appropriate train cars on both the Confederation and Trillium lines.

The commission approved that as a temporary measure in 2018, while directing city staff to report back 15 months after the launch of the light rail network in September 2019.

According to the latest staff report, allowing bikes on board LRT has caused "no operational difficulties or overall inconvenience" for other riders.

Nor had there been any complaints between September 2019 and November 2020, it noted.

The policy also discourages people from driving to LRT stations, provides health benefits and reduces congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, the report said.

"If you look at cities where there tends to be high bicycle ridership … there tends to be this kind of integration," said Érinn Cunningham, president of Bike Ottawa.

"It just makes it easier to not use your car and makes it easier to use transit."

For similar reasons, city staff are also recommending that "lighter, two-wheeled electric bicycles" and e-scooters — which were recently approved for a second straight summer, despite some safety concerns — also be permitted. The report doesn't distinguish between privately owned e-scooters and those available for rent.

Cunningham said that was fine with him, even if Bike Ottawa hadn't taken an official position on e-scooters.

"I think it's a good form of active micro-transportation," he said. "So I also see it as a positive."

While smaller electric bicycles should be allowed, staff recommend banning larger electric bikes that "are similar to mopeds" or have more than two wheels from the network.

Transit users would also have to walk their e-scooters and electric bicycles while inside stations, not ride them.

The unapproved use of drones on any city transit property should also be prohibited, the report said, as they could distract bus and train operators and potentially be used "with ill intent."

The recommendations are set to go before transit commission Feb. 17.

Apparently the new open payment system is in operation at one fare gate at Rideau Station, starting today.

Accepts Visa/MC/Apple Pay & Google Pay.

To be rolled out to the rest of the O-Train stations and buses later this year.

Nice. Weird to see Watson, Manconi and Hubley in the video. These videos usually feature random people.

One of the most advanced systems is probably factual, but not the most advance (what he says vs what's written).
