I am still very skeptical of this private gondola. From what I've heard, the private, luxury gondola developer hasn't shown his financing plan to the City and has no evidence he even has any funding whatsoever.

I see you added that word 'luxury' in there.

Can you define what you mean by that?

Just dropped into the TD bank branch at 149th and Stony Plain Road. It's closing in July and moving to the 156th street branch. Closing as part of the redevelopment of Jasper Gates to add the residential towers...and so it begins...

Nothing yet I don't think.

I hope that the current building is incorporated, but my guess is removal and up...

Given that it's a DC1, it's not unreasonable to assume the building is being incorporated and designated? Although with Kamil behind this one I have my doubts.

Unless things have changed, he told me that it would not be... but those were early days.

Because Edmontonians have figured out how to drive in snow. In Vancouver, they go full apocalyptic every time a dusting of snow falls.

Because Gagalrdi up Burnaby mountain to SFU is significantly steeper, longer, and curvier than anything in Edmonton?

I see that a crew is back on site of the Vermillion Condos at 116st/106ave. That site has been quiet for almost a year now if I recall correctly.

Bellamy Hill Road where Route 9 with the articulated buses has a grade of 8.2% on average compared to Gaglardi Way at 7.6% average.

EDIT: Re-reading the letter, the applicant only intends to keep the west facade.

Given MacKenzie Tower land is for sale and didn't go ahead, I have my doubts on this one.

We will see The Clancey go forward first before anything happens from Limak with the Horne & Pitfield, imo.

If they actually have no funding, then worst case Council says 'yes' to allowing them to move forward with lease agreements, site prep, etc., but since they have no funding, none of that happens.

There really isn't any negative implications to the City by saying yes to the Gondola group, as they aren't providing any cash.

Good.
At best a mediocre residential tower would be built with a lazy facade podium. At worst, the building will be demo'd and nothing built at all.
Both terrible outcomes.

I dont know what the inside of this existing building looks like, or how much of the existing interior is salvageable, but doing your best to retain some of these old spaces is important in creating interesting retail and workspaces; especially in Edmonton where there is already such a dearth of them.

Of course someone will chime in with the reality that this building is more financially valuable as rubble than standing.

^I tend to agree with this. The building structurally I'm assuming is fine. Could you do an interesting loft/retail or office conversion with tower on the parking lot. Absolutely. Not sure if the numbers make sense but a more creative developer/owner would certainly explore this.

I can't see this being a more desirable location than MacKenzie Tower, which land is now for sale, even given proximity to Ice District.
