Makes sense, you could stack a whole lot of density on top of the rink - ditto the Safeway on Robson.

Not to sidetrack the conversation, but exactly what kind of museum are we thinking of here?

It's assessed at $10.24 million, although it'll be worth a bit more once the townhouses are built. You throw in the first $10 million, and I'm sure everybody who posts here will chip in another $10 to help you out.

Given it's location, how about an LGBT museum? It would probably be the first one of it's kind in Canada as far as I know. Vancouver as a whole does really poorly for Museums and Cultural attractions for it's size and prominence in this country.

Does anyone still remember when it was a Macaroni Grill? I think I'd rather have that back than what it's earmarked for now.

Vancouver is one of the worst cities when it comes to art and cultural amenities (UBC does not count). Even some of the suburb municipalities are putting in pretty nice little museums these days: namely New Westminster, Surrey & City of North Vancouver.

That would probably be before my lifetime.

480 Broughton St (DP-2020-00849 / RZ-2020-00063) – UDP

Generational Wisdom Brings Urban Design Panel Support For New Harbourside School
480 Broughton St (DP-2020-00849 / RZ-2020-00063) – Coal Harbour Elementary School (Marina Neighbourhood Plan, Parcel 1.5)

It’s hard to believe this elementary school was first planned in 1990, back before Hannah and I had even stepped into a classroom. To say a lot has changed since then is an understatement, and the lack of snow this winter shows that’s true for our climate as well. That’s forced this building to be raised out of what is now a flood plain, and contributed to it being 8.6m taller than the 30m envisioned in the Coal Harbour Master Plan.

The evolution of city policy played a role too, as building heights on sloped elevations are now calculated from their lowest point rather than the highest. However, the biggest impact is due to the Vancouver School Board’s decision to allow BC Hydro to build the oil-free West End Substation underground near Nelson Park. That’s unlocked enough funding to build this school, and 60 social housing apartments, 20 more than originally envisioned. Of course, that also triggered this Urban Design Panel review.

Agreed that Vancouver is culturally mediocre for a city of its size ... but an LGBTQ museum? ..... Puh-leeze, no.

I don't know if this has been discussed before: U.K. architects design condos near Vancouver’s Stanley Park as tall, curvy trees

Is Vancouver ready for tree houses?

Two new residential towers proposed for Alberni and Bidwell streets in the West End are designed to mimic large undulating cedars to lend a Vancouver character and identify to the project, according to the design architects, Heatherwick studio from the U.K.

The design uses the “tree as our inspiration,” with the “idea of gentle curving vertical structures that connect the public on the ground flour to the top of the towers,” the architects say in materials to support its rezoning application for the land.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, instead of the usual open house for the project, the city is holding an online question and answer period, from Feb. 22 to March 14.The application is being considered under the rezoning policy for the West End, and the city is inviting comments on how the proposal would fit into the surrounding neighbourhood.

The project is the first highrise complex that the world-renowned architectural firm has designed in Canada. In the report, the designers say they wanted to counter the “generic glass and steel towers which look and feel the same no matter where you are in the world.”

It called that style “boring and sterile” and lacking in character and identity.

It offers critiques of a half-dozen existing condo buildings on Alberni and none is flattering. It notes the “imposing facade” of one and the “unwelcoming entrance” of another. A third building has a “defensive landscape” and a fourth offers “empty spaces” at street level.

“It’s difficult to have a positive emotional connection with a huge, flat building,” the architects said.

The two tree towers, one 30 storeys, the other 34, at 1728 Alberni St. and 735 Bidwell St., would be made up of 401 strata residential units — studios and one-, two- and three bedrooms — with balconies and views to the mountains, Stanley Park and the harbour.

The project proposes more spaces for bikes (524) than for cars (499). The buildings would replace two mid-1980s-era apartment towers on the land.

The new towers would sit on a five-storey, “mixed use podium” that would incorporate varied architectural materials, including wood and lots of greenery. Each of the buildings’ two bases is styled after a “green mountain” that would house restaurants and shops, and have a ground-floor plaza designed to be closed off in winter and opened up in summer.

Design elements are borrowed from nearby Denman and Davie villages to incorporate the vibrancy of that street life, and from low-rise neighbourhoods, which have sunlight for pedestrians, grass among the pavement and mini-parks.

It said the complex is designed with an “active ground plain” intended to attract a diversity of people, be accessible and lively, and foster community belonging.

The project is to be jointly developed by Bosa properties and Kingswood properties.

“The concept aims to bring a new level of global design excellence to Vancouver, featuring two curvaceous, light-filled towers and a publicly accessible ground-level plaza for community engagement,” Heatherwick, said in a statement.

It’s not known when the buildings, if approved, would be completed.

OK, if you insist. But the LGBTQ movement had more pioneering steps happen with it in San Francisco than Vancouver, and might be more appropriate there.
Every city has an LGBTQ community. It just seems that if one is going to approach its significance historically and / or socioloically, such an acknowledgement would be more appropriate in a city that is its 'epicentre' so to speak.

Vancouver is a Canadian cultural epicentre for the LGBTQ community.

We don't need to live our lives according to some past inferiority complex that prioritizes the American experience.

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. That’s like saying an aviation museum would only be appropriate in North Carolina. Maybe It’s people like you with that mentality that make Vancouver “culturally mediocre “

Well there is Jim Deva who was an anti-censorship and LGBTQ activist who ran the Little Sisters Bookstore, one of the only LGBTQ bookstores in western Canada.

So we have ourselves a solid starting place...
