$2300 fine, what an absolute joke. It's obvious, the vpd and the city doesn't want to hurt these businesses any further. But still need to publicly recognize that they've broken the law.

How were they open yesterday? Does Coastal Health still have to come by to shut them down?

Oh I don't know... perhaps for blatantly violating a public health order where police had to be called in to — patrons out?

The $2,300 fine is peanuts to a restaurant. I think a bit of light consumer shaming and boycotting would give the business a bit of deserved humble pie, they clearly thought they were above what other establishments were trying to abide by.

But, but, but, it wasn't their fault. It was the customers, yeah that's it, the customers. They didn't want to leave, but they were just before the police showed up. And, and, it was only 38, not a 100! And the poor owners had tried to convince the customers to cancel, but they would have none of it! And all the booze was bought already and it would have gone bad. And, and it was the government's fault since the owners couldn't get any free gov't money and the rent was due, and what were the poor owners to do???

Have you no compassion??

FWIW, they sound like a bunch of spoiled rich kids. They should lose their liquor license for each day foe each customer that was there ... so only 38 days. That would likely hurt more than $2300.

BTW, I did have reservations for NYE that had to be altered. The resto called us as soon as Bonnie made the announcement and altered the evening. In the end it turned out great, the resto followed the rules, everyone had a great time and as it was the first time I went there, they now have a new returning customer as the service and food was top notch. If they were desperate (and they probly were), I don't really blame them for trying to survive as a business.

There are likely hundreds of restos that are trying to survive, yet no one else seems to have had the disregard for a public health order like these guys.

I mean if your business is going down the drain you might as well blow it up on the way out the door.

They were certainly not the only restaurant open late on Nye. Just a stupid location to try and pull it off without getting noticed.

This is going to blow up in Starbucks face. That Granville Island location was literally just renovated.

LOL no, it won't. Seems like a big list, but I bet the list of still active stores is ridiculous.

I am surprised they are closing their locations in malls.

If my count is accurate, there will be 31 in Vancouver once the 19 listed close. They're closing recent stores (Boheme on E Hastings), the pickup only store at Main St Skytrain, mall locations - there's no obvious pattern so presumably it's purely related to performance (which may reflect the rent as much as the sales). There will be over 30 Tim Hortons in the city, and I guess they might expand more into some of the places Starbucks have abandoned. When they opened in Chinatown, the relatively new Starbucks closed down very soon after. And of course Starbucks have said they'll be opening some new stores.

I'm also of the mind that this will hurt Starbucks greatly in the long term. They built their marketshare by offering their customers convenience via locations and the app not because their coffee was spectacular. If they lose the convenience factor a large chunk of their consumers will move to the next most convenient coffee house. They sabotaged their reward program over the years and that will no longer keep the consumer loyal.

Yet Starbucks stock is at all time highs while Tim Hortons languishes. I routinely have horrible customer service experiences at Tim's (I must be a glutton for punishment).

I'm not loyal to any brand, but do find Starbucks convenient.

Guildford Town Centre has two Starbucks one upstairs inside the mall, always has a lineup, and the one downstairs on the outside which is always dead, people just don't want to go outside to get a coffee there and it closes early so one can just go to the one a block down the street.

Strange that Brentwood still has two locations and keeping both.

I saw a Fresh Slice Pizza opening somewhere, it was in a previous Starbucks location, I just can't remember where I saw it though. I imagine the empty stores won't be too hard to fill.

The Starbucks at Station Square on the Kingsway side closed down a while back and a Coco is opening soon in that spot.

I wonder what will become of the Main and 14th Starbucks. It's a large space in a high traffic area, so I presume someone will take it quite quickly. Big patio space too.
