So many reasons and island culture I guess. Everyone agrees with short height limits in historic sections of Victoria, but even outside of that a typical constraint is 14 to 17 storeys unless there is a compelling reason - such as the preservation of the Hudson Bay building, which in turn the city allowed the developer to build Victoria’s tallest at 26 stories, a 23 storey rental under construction and a completed 12 storey rental all on the former parkade lot.

There is proposal by Starline that is going through the approval process that will remake a two block section of downtown with all rental buildings of 19, 21, 27, 28 and 32 storeys. Will be interesting to see how this goes with the desperate need for more housing.. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the city knock these down in height as per their usual practice.

Emigrating from London UK to Halifax NS I never really appreciated Halifax for what it was. It's only since travelling to other parts of Canada/US that I realized what good bones it has. It really is a great little city. Hopefully it will grow into the major Canadian metropolis it was always meant to be. I may not see it but I wouldn't be surprised to see it a Top 6 metro before the century is out. It has so much going for it.

I too love the gradual build-up from rural to urban with increased traffic & freeway lanes as you get closer to the climax of a central core.

Ottawa has some great density of towers, but for sure lacks in height and design. That particular vantage point is much more engaging in person than on camera.

Looking forward to what the next decade will west of the CBD along the escarpment, LeBreton Flats and down the Trillium to Dow's Lake.

That Victorian stretch of Yonge between College and Bloor is like a hybrid between a central downtown shopping street and a neighbourhood main street, but where the surrounding residential area is made up of side streets of skyscrapers.

I don't think there's anywhere like that in the rest of Canada. Maybe St. Catherine west of Concordia in Montreal, or Denman St. in Vancouver's West End? But not quite.

In terms of energy and also things like the long vistas towards tall skyscrapers in the distance, that stretch of Yonge actually feels like a Manhattan avenue.

Based on the trends in Ottawa's Centretown, Bank Street might end up looking simmilar, but on a much smaller scale. Here are two towers proposed, 25 and 27 floors, abutting heritage commercial/residential stock.
