The northern highway needs report that was released a little while back indicated that the province was going to continue "design work for Highway 69" or something to that effect.

I think that might give some insight into how quickly (or lack thereof) contracts are going to be called for Highway 69.

The current work is scheduled to wrap up in the summer of 2022. I wouldn't expect another expansion contract until at least that time.

The one that has a date is under construction. The rest have had negotiations, but I am not sure where they are.

The fact that all of 69 being widened on there goes against that. I doubt 69 will be converted within 10 year.

AFAIK the design work has been done. They are projects waiting for money. My expectations, based on how they have been doing them is as one chunk wraps up the next one begins. With about 80km still to do, and they seem to take 5 years, per 20km, I expect about 15-20 years before it's done all the way.

It lists funded expansion projects, however does not list funded maitenence projects beyond the 3 year timeframe.

The last pdf issued (2017-2022) had all road work planned in that 5 year timeframe. The current digital version lists no additional works despite being published 3 years later. Right now it's really only displaying 2 years worth of information while the old program displayed 5 years worth.

I wonder why. I wonder if this is sloppiness, or deliberate.

I have my suspicions that it is deliberate. Anything major that has a longer timeframe than 3 years probably hasn't been tendered officially, or would be broken into smaller contracts.

Given the province's financial condition, committing to projects 5 years down the road seems overly ambitious. By not publicizing it, they can alter the timeline and not give the appearance of committing officially.

Sounds like all they did was transfer the old info to the new format without actually adding any new info that might have come out since that 2017-22 pdf was put out.

It's a PC government, they're not actually doing any work, they just have to make it look like they are.

Well blasting has begun west of Nipigon. If that's considered for show too, then everything is for show...

Heh I thought swimmer_spe was gonna post that here but I guess I will have to do it myself.

MTO has secured the ROW for a future divided Highway 144 around Sudbury. (Sorry @Loco101 not Timmins Bypass )

Funny thing - there is already a petition to have it stopped.

As much as I dislike the PCs, I don't think this is true. For example, they have added the 401 widening through Tilbury area, 401 resurfacing in Elgin county, Dingman Drive bridge replacement on the 401, they have a more concrete timeline for 401 grand river bridge replacement. There's plenty of new stuff as well as more concrete timelines in many cases.

It is however possible that they are not adding projects with 3+ year time horizon that are maintenance projects. I am not sure what reason could be - possibly it's because too many of those projects don't end up meeting the specified timelines.

Any government would have replaced the Dingman Bridge. It's not a pet project for the PCs.

What I think is more likely is that MTO continues to identify maintenance work on a 5 year timeline, however have simply stopped publishing it for whatever reason.

Internally, the MTO keeps a ten year capital and maintenance program. Projects can move around a bit, here and there, but the province has a pretty good asset management program for capital and maintenance programs.

My point being, it does seem like they have added a few new projects to the new website that were not there in the last PDF.

^ My point was, that some of those projects were just added because it has been several years since the last PDF was written.

For example. the Grand River Bridge wasn't added because the conservatives are building it sooner than the liberals would have, it's just that it's due for construction now, so it appears with more clarity on the list.

It also depends who is in power.

The Libs published a public 5-year program, the PCs do not. Looks like they did get around to publishing something in the form of an interactive map. It's a little easier to know what's up since you can see all the planned work in the areas you live/care about better than just scrolling through a document to find all the roads.

The NDP hasn't been in power in the modern internet era but its possible they would do something different if they were the government- same goes for the Greens.

I preferred the old PDFs that the Liberals issued compared to the map, (though I agree that the map is probably more useful for people who aren't me).

The old PDFs would usually show about 3 years of project start dates reliably, and then years four and five were more up in the air.

The map is nice, but it generally only shows 1 or 2 years of project start dates, and then everything else beyond that is more vague.

The only area where the seem to be specific is Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

I noticed that the first phase of Highway 17 from the Manitoba border easterly seems to have a completion date now too (2023).

Sudbury Mayor’s once again looking into checkpoints and northern bubbles.
I mean, sure why not.

It is something we have been complaining about all pandemic. They shut down the North Bay and Parry Sound Health District's snowmobile trails because southerners were traveling up. If they gave the OPP the task of not only checking, but also the legal ability to fine everyone who shouldn't be coming, it would be a good thing.

The current Bradford Bypass plan has proven controversial. I’m actually surprised that it will cut through Holland Marsh.
What about just upgrading Green Lane - Miller Road and Davis Drive into a freeway?
