John Oliver is actually pretty famous, but I don't think it's the one you think we're thinking of.

I always have to suppress a little chuckle when I drive past the John Oliver park sign at the intersection of Hiways 10 and 91.

For a real blast from the past they should name the Patullo replacement the "Flying Phil Bridge".

I was going to note that Premier John Oliver has a high school and town named after him, though many still wouldn't know who he was. Same goes for other streets and/or towns. Bowser, McBride, Davie, Robson, Smithe, Dunsmuir, Prior, all long forgotten Premiers.

But hey, who knows. Given the age of reconciliation, I wouldn't be surprised to see an Indigenous, or Indigenous-inspired name be attached to the new Massey Crossing.

I think you are right. I don't think any bridges have been named after anybdy since the Alex Fraser Bridge in 1986.

According to Wikipedia, which sources it from an archived InTransitBC brochure, the bridge is called the North Arm Bridge or the North Arm Fraser Bridge. I've found other examples that use that name as well, but I'm still looking for a definitive government source.

Sometimes older people do. I remember someone in some shop once saying "deas island tunnel" to me and catching me off guard, as I'd never heard it before. I still understood, being the only tunnel and being by Deas Island, but it was neat hearing it.

Could name the Massey replacement the "Tsawwassen Bridge", nails the native name, is pronounceable by most people, and is close-enough in being named for where it goes. Plus we'd get to see people in Ladner get huffy about being overlooked.

It's always been the "Deas Island Tunnel" for me. It's how I get to Lulu Island.

In other words they're in "pre-construction mode". The bridge itself is supposed to open late 2023 with road upgrades completed in 2024 and 2025.

I think its safe to say there are other bridges in BC since 1986 that are named after people but they all predate the "I am an angsty millennial who discovered Wikipedia and I am outraged about something and I will tell all my friends on twitter that this is an outrage until either someone gives me money, media attention or they change something as a feelgood measure." phase.
