Interesting, I hadn’t heard a wink about it

That Best Western building is an island in a sea of surface parking. While there is no denying that it's really ugly, it at least comes up to the property line on Hargrave and York and is 5 storeys. Someone said something a little while ago that actually made me laugh, something along the lines of - the golden rule of development in downtown Winnipeg is that something has to be demolished in order to build something new lol.

Wouldn't taking away a hotel space from that location be more of an incentive for another hotel development somewhere else, or is that just wishful thinking?

Welcome.

It's going through the process. I'd be shocked if anything happened their in the short term.

The owner/developer is trying to push the auto compound out of their by ignoring them. Likely won't happen.

So the best western that was just updated a couple years ago? I think some SSP forumers have mentioned that the lot is a prime target in recent times.

Which lot are the drilling holes on. The lot on Hargrave or the one on York and Donald?

I wonder how much it would take to pry the WCB parking lot from their ice cold hands. I know a guy who works there and lives ion Norwood Flats. Instead of walking 10 mins, he drives to work because he can park for free.

It's already a hotel.

I have no idea what they are building but the 5 story tall drill has dug holes two feet from the building and there's a pile of dirt where the taxis park.

The rumour was a building about the same size as Broadview Manor. That's 18-22 stories tall.

I can't see what's happening with the parking lot right now so who knows if the footprint of the building will expand. There's still a swimming pool under that parking lot.

There's a large cat there as well with a front bucket but they haven't cleared the lot of snow. There are few, if any, cars parking at the Best Western.

As you know the hotel has been closed since March. It partially opened in the fall for some reason, maybe gambling. You had to go in the back door. I'm not sure if that is still open.

I can only see the front drive way and the front doors. They drilled a hole right next to the building ten feet from the front doors. They used an 18-24 inch wide drill bit.

So it's just a plumbing repair and the hotel is reopening on February 26th?

Edit: They filled the hole with concrete.

I can't imagine they would have done all the cosmetic upgrades if this were true, as I doubt this development would have come from thin air in 2020 without thinking it was possible before.

I don't know if I'd even be excited about this with the amount of parking lots around there. It's not like we'd just be losing a one or two storey building, it's a pretty decent and busy (pre-pammy) hotel. Sure an upgrade, but why. If it has to go on a building, tear down Ivory or Garriock Insurance.

They filled in the first hole and they are now drilling a second large, maybe 30 inches wide, hole right beside the receiving door at the south end of the hotel.

Maybe I'm wrong about them tearing it down. It would make more sense to build on Ivory or Garriock. But the hotel has been closed for 9 months. Almost no cars are parked there monthly now when it was usually full. Why don't they at least have monthly parkers?

Something is strange.

Hotel business will come back eventually, maybe even by late spring. I heard from friends in the industry that this hotel had one of the highest booking rates of the downtown hotels, I imagine as it's on the cheaper end yet still a recognized brand and kept-up building. I've stayed there twice after events at the RBCCC as the rooms are decent and it's right there.

It would be a great time for a hotel to do some noisy work like that.

May as well do maintenance. Nothing else going on.

I'm pretty sure after so many months they're all going

Will a third tower go up by Artis REIT at Winnipeg Square? Sure wish they could have done 2 at once.
