More ongoing demolition today. I couldn't find any land development permits though, so who knows what will happen after the demolition. Still a chance they'll clear the lot and then leave it fenced off until they can find a company to lease a significant amount of space in the tower.

Drapac Proposal at Allen Plaza - Duda Paine Architects

Source: https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/2020/12/14/australian-developer-atlanta-skyscraper.html

Quote:
A development group led by real estate fund giant Drapac Capital Partners is reviving plans for a downtown skyscraper, signaling its belief in Atlanta’s trajectory as an expanding Sunbelt tech hub.

The concept: The $450 million tower would rise at 50 Allen Plaza, the capstone site within the planned 9-block development that more than a decade ago revitalized abandoned downtown parking lots with new office and residential buildings and lured companies including Southern Co. and Ernst & Young. (Read more here.) Designed by Duda|Paine Architects, the proposed tower includes an amenity deck, restaurant and bar connected by an exterior elevator to street-level retail. The deck will be accessible to the public. Higher up, a “central park” is geared to office tenants in the post-COVID environment that want the flexibility of outdoor space.

I don't know how likely this is to happen but wow! The height would be incredible but my gosh it looks identical to so many of the Pickard Chilton towers.

I really like it - looks like it's at least 700 feet.

The What Now Atlanta article suggests that it'll be 750' tall, which would make it the fifth-tallest building in the city, between 191 Peachtree and the Westin.

It looks taller than Suntrust Plaza in the rendering. If this get done, it’s shows Atlanta going to another tier by attracting a foreign developer. Downtown hasn’t had a new building that size in over 20 years. I think the developer knows a big tech company move to Atlanta is eminent.

I wonder if this affects Portman's proposal for the North Avenue Marta site. How likely is it that two massive offices towers lease enough tenants while looking at the same time?

Not to my eyes. Suntrust is a few blocks in the background in that rendering so based solely on that rendering it looks shorter.

Basically what was missed with the original 50 Allen Plaza, just humpier. Is this attempt 3 at this site?

What happened to this one?

The Cousins tower is listed at less than 500k sf so 50 Allen Plaza would be almost twice as large. I thought the Cousins project seemed to be a safe bet to get built because of it relatively small size and the tech boom in Midtown.

We'll See

I'm not holding my breath on this one.
The article mentions some hurdles for this development to overcome before it moves forward as well.
I'm thinking that Portman's Midtown site next to Tower TS and BOA takes off before this one gets traction.
I hope that I am wrong and they all get built though.

I’m with you. Remote work doesn’t help this at all. My long term goal, and many others, is to continue working from home. I save so much time and money by not having to go into the office.

Things seem kind of shaky right now for a proposal this size. Mainly commenting though, because I'm just over the glass-and-steel look, accompanying big corporate HQs. It was neat when it was new to ATL, like we'd hit the big time... but the honeymoon is over, these are starting to feel kind of stark, anonymous and maybe a little dystopian? I'm ready for the city to start growing from the ground up, in a lot of little ways, rather than from the top down in big chunks, if that makes any sense.

I get it and that's how I feel too. I can't wait for the major corridors, such as Ponce, North Avenue, 10th Street and 14th Street to start getting more midrise, mixed use and "missing middle" developments to start tying together the fabric of the city. In addition to all of the amazing growth intown, there needs to be a balance of some "fine grain" thrown in there.

I mean to be fair, Atlanta hasn't really had a tower of this magnitude built in 14 years. We've had plenty of non-descript infill over the last decade. Atlanta deserves a tower of this size.

Nothing is deserved. It's worked for.

Interesting article about the proposed Midtown Art Walk.

https://atlantaintownpaper.com/2020/12/g...ransformed-into-todays-midtown-art-walk/

Does anyone know who owns the land where the proposed linear park on 12th Street is located?

https://ctycms.com/ga-midtown/docs/midtown-art-walk-concept.pdf

To make this park a reality, the city would have to buy it, I assume?
