I note that all the pre-load along Highway 99 had been removed. Either no longer necessary or its finished doing its job?

Yep, almost as if it is playing out exactly as I have been predicting for the last 4 years.

Sometimes I hate being right.

Seems that the best option was to have continued with the project with a slight reduction in scope, reducing the bridge from 10 lanes to 8, oh wait, I have said that before!

Oh well!

No matter how many times I explained the real situation at hand everyone else just talked / argued about bullshit that was neither here nor there.

Good news that at least an 8 lane crossing (submerged tunnel or bridge) are in the business case as the two most important options. The irony is that consultations with stakeholders will likely be short, as this project would be perfect for promoting economic recovery federally and provincially.

Dailyhive recently published an article about the case:

8 lane immersed tunnel option:

But that Steveston interchange is...missing an overpass?

8 lane bridge option:

Looks like a nice twin of the Alex Fraser Bridge.

My concern is that the upgrades to Hwy99 are going to get neutered or scaled down because they want to please Richmond and Delta who were crying "there's gonna be more traffic!!", even though the upgrades are just as important as the new crossing. Imagine keeping that outdated Steveston interchange as is.

Well, at least they didn't propose a 6 lane crossing lol

That is exactly the plan. As I have explained many times before.

They even plan to retain the existing overpass structure at the Steveston Interchange!

Essentially this project will JUST be the tunnel.

Ever since the original 10-lane bridge died, I have been rooting for a tunnel. We have enough bridges and having a tunnel would be nice change. No other reason.

Interesting that in the bridge option one of the tunnels would stay? Looks like the Deans Island entry is there in the rendering...

The reason for a 10 lane (versus 8 lane) bridge was to have climbing lanes for trucks.

So I'm glad that the 8 lane repalcement will be a tunnel with shallower slopes than a bridge, so that throughput will probably be closer to the 10 lane bridge.

For the record my issue isn’t with it being a tunnel rather than a bridge (even though I prefer a bridge for views / experience), my issue is the severe reduction in scale of the project along the highway corridor itself (including the elimination of rebuilt interchanges and the median lane rapid bus system) couple with a decade long delay at a cost of a billion more dollars. Not to mention all the geotechnical and prep work already completed for the bridge.

So, spending much more for much less with a decade delay.

does anyone here really think the tunnel will happen? i am 99% sure it will never happen.

they will need to trench/dredge across an ecologically sensitive area to do that. i very highly doubt that'll be approved by the federal government.

do people here really think it'll happen? especially with a federal government all into saving fish/wales/etc. you know there will probably be protests about it to.

The Fraser River is dredged every year to maintain the navigation channel, this is nothing new.

Part of the original 10 lane bridge included massive dredging (and extra height) to allow more ships up and down the Fraser.

Yes and this is so important. On Highway 1 there is a small uphill eastbound at Lougheed and even there trucks get slown down to 70km/h which impact the traffic flow. Climbing up a huge bridge this is many times worse and a climbing lane is so warranted.

The interchanges can be upgraded at a later date, what’s important is getting the new tunnel built asap

The interchanges are just as a bottleneck as the tunnel. They are simply not designed for today's demand.

The best time to upgrade them is when you are replacing the tunnel at the same time, to keep costs down and to avoid long term disruption. How many times do we have to endure this pathetic notion of "let's build it piece meal and do it later" nonsense??? Hey, it only took more than 30 years to remove that stupid traffic light on Hwy91 and 72nd.

For the people SoF, one of the biggest issues will be that the road is toll-free.

Christy put up the 10 lane bridge because she had little intention of actually funding much of the project as toll would do that.

I agree with you but this is the way we have always built infrastructure projects in Vancouver, why would this be any different?
