The reason to co-locating these services was a study had been done and found that families often needed to access services from multiple agencies in different locations, at different times, etc. By having all the services on a single campus presented opportunities to better service the needs of the community and presented opportunities to work across disciplines and traditional organizational boundaries.

As for the Shriners hospital building - back in the 80s it seemed more empty than used and was looking really dated even then. Similar to the old Manitoba Clinic before it closed but a slightly different period, maybe a touch older? Sorry memory is very fuzzy of the place. It definitely felt like the use in the 80s wasn't the original use though and had actually been placed into an existing building designed for a different purpose with minimal renovations done. Perhaps at one time it was a home for children/youth with physical disabilities that were deemed to need to be separated from their families/community before society moved towards being more inclusive.
I can tell you that's a great thought, but does not work in practice. "Oh we can just go the SSCY centre and they'll take care of everything in one shot." Not a chance. It takes months of waiting to get through for a single referral. The doctors there are not necessarily all there on the same days either. My son has appointments there, children's, st. b hospital, st.b clinic across the street. Still goes allover the place.

Being in the same building maybe provides some efficiency that the doctors are in the same physical building. But in general, with e-health, files are accessible to all the doctors pretty easily.

SSCY Centre is really nice though. They provide a lot of great services. The building is nice, but those silver arches outside a kind of ugly.

^ The canopy at SSCY is ugly but I can appreciate its function.

Some major work being done on the RWB parkade on Edmonton Street. Does anyone know if this has to do with the new RWB residence?

Yes, an announcement is forthcoming.

Amazing! I hope it fills up that gap between the church and the RWB building well!

Pretty confident that is not a church. I think it may be a remnant from a monetary that is still owned by the Church.

Those are apartments I think. Maybe for refugees? Single mothers?

I believe it is the Holy Names House of Peace, transitional housing.

There is a chapel there with regular service, but as mentioned the main purpose of the complex is transitional housing and services for refugee/immigrant women.

Google has it listed as a church?

It has transitional housing. But I believe there is a chapel with public service as well.

Found out about this development through a recommended page called "save the Lemay forest"

Looks like a developer is eyeing up an infill site for that treed area in old St Norbert.

http://landmarkplanning.ca/project/st-norbert-development.php

I can only imagine this will be strongly opposed by locals. 1350 units does seem a bit heavy for that area.

^ Interesting. I don't mind the scale of the development in principle although I have to admit I can understand why people who live in the area might be apprehensive about it.

I am amazed by the seemingly unlimited demand for multiunit housing in St. Norbert... at the rate things are going, it feels like it's just a matter of time until we start seeing multitower developments like the ones along the Skytrain line in Burnaby, Surrey and such?! I kid of course, but the level of activity is surprising to me.

The sign on the House of the Holy Names building used to indicate it belonged to a Catholic monastery which have different purposes than a church but can include a place to pray.

Yes it used to be a monastery but the chapel still exists there today, and mass is held several times a week. No it's not a church, but it's understandable why one might think it's one. Holy Names is a non profit run by a nun which purchased the building in the early 200's I believe. So it's no longer strictly owned by the church but is a church affiliated entity.

^ It's hard to sum up HNHOP in one word... it's a bit of a mixed bag. Basically a Church-affiliated social service that provides housing for women, various social services and runs a chapel with religious services.

I understand why people from the outside might think it is a "church" but it was made for a different purpose and does that somewhat still to this day. It is like saying St Peters Hall on Inkster is a "church". Sort of right but also missing some important details.

Well that would probably be closer to being right. St Peters is planning on building a new church building on the Inkster site and relocate there. Built the hall first as a money maker to help cover the costs.

^ They intend to put a school there too.

Going off on a tangent here, but there is a huge swath of NW Winnipeg with a large number of Catholic families but no Catholic school... many families send their kids to Catholic schools in the North End (Holy Ghost, Immaculate Heart) and the West End (St. Edward's) instead.

At one point Immaculate Heart wanted to move out of their current location on Flora near McGregor out to West St. Paul which is understandable as there probably aren't many Ukrainian families with school-age kids left around their current location, but from what I understand they ran into a bit of a fundraising wall. The capital cost of building a whole school to modern standards is pretty immense... I would imagine it's exceedingly hard to pull off unless you have a couple of super-heavyweight benefactors in your corner writing big cheques. I don't think St. Peter's has that but it is a huge parish so they have the numbers to get it done.

Speaking of the RWB site, anyone know when that announcement will be made?
