As far as Atlantic Station being disconnected, it's not very easy to 'connect' a former Steel Mill to surrounding fabric it was always walled off from. And Glenwood Park is the absolute worst example you could use as being disconnected. They did an excellent job of seamlessly connecting the existing street grid of the adjacent neighborhood. Most cities would kill to have a fantastic neighborhood like this, and considering it replaced an old cement plant makes it even more incredible.

This constant negativity concerning nearly every element of Atlanta is growing real old...

Ok, touche. I'll give you this one. Glenwood is just now becoming more integrated into the rest of the city, but this took years to accomplish. It's worth noting that the Fuqua development next door did not help to facilitate this though....

Ok, since Glenwood is such a prime example of neo urbanism done right, then WHY is this success not being duplicated in other parts of the city...? Riddle me this.

I agree the constant bashing of everything gets tiring. I started to make the same observation several times the past 2-3 weeks and deleted my posts for fear of being attacked by everyone. Good to see I’m not alone in feeling there is to much negativity about every little thing in ALL the Atlanta forums. It’s constant gripe and most are ridiculous stuff. Everyone has opinions granted but feels like some just want to always make sure they meet a daily requirement of negative posts just to post something. I’m not singling anyone out by saying that so keep it nice people.

Hey, I usually post overwhelmingly positive comments about Atlanta. I am Team Atl. I just had a gripe about the whole overused and clichéd "mini-city" buzzword and that triggered me....

I’m not sure why the comment on Atlantic Station being separate. Is it because of the highrises not being surrounded by others. Hell I’ve easily walked there to go the the movies probably 10 times from Grant Park (5-6 miles depending on route) and taken different routes each time and never felt disconnected. I’ve taken MLK Marta to Arts Center and use the shuttle plenty of times. Id call that transit connected. I own a car but like to walk and use transit in real life and not just talk about the city needing this or that. The bridge across the connector is bad and needs landscaping for sure but hell that’s the way 95% of the bridges ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD are. Also it easily connects to GA Tech if you walk any of the streets north of 10th. I’ve even walked from GSU up Marietta to Howell Mill and entered from the waterworks by foot. It’s not the greatest experience and needs sidewalks in areas but it’s fine and better than the majority of cities I’ve visited once you get out of the downtown cores. It’s a highrise district surrounded by SFHs and railroad tracks so not sure what you are expecting.

Glenwood park is just a normal walking neighborhood. I’ve been walking it for 20 years. It connects seemlessly to its surrounding and now has the Beltline and bike lanes running right down it’s western side. Do many of y’all complaining actually get out and walk the city. I walk weekly from Grant Park all over downtown midtown and the Beltline making 10-12 mile loops on Saturdays and never have issues, feel unsafe or see anything that doesn’t feel like every other city in the world and I’ve traveled a good deal in my life.

I regularly walk to the Glenwood Kroger. It’s like every other shopping center in the world. Get over it. If you aren’t crossing a surface lot then you would be crossing a parking deck and riding an elevator to get to different stores like you do at the Target Buckhead shopping center. Same thing people.... Same experiences in NYC, Dubai, Mexico or any city in the world. Part of cities built before the auto are different than parts of cities built post auto. Old Venice = no cars, new Venice post cars has parking lots. Wow how novel; right? That will always be true and will never be different until the auto disappears....hahaha not going to happen...Doesn’t mean somethings can improve always but get with reality. I’m not attacking you NY. Your comments are standard fair around here. You just were the posts I choose to respond but could have been any of the constant barrages on the forum.

That’s pretty impressive considering construction didn’t start until 2003 and the development didn’t open until 2005.

I’ve been walking that area since I moved into Grant Park in 2001. Glenwood Avenue existed long before that and the minute streets started to be built I began wondering along them watching the construction and actually walked the old site. I should have said 19 years 10 months since I didn’t move into Grant Park until February 2001. I have pictures of the area before it’s current look it just wasn’t called Glenwood Park at that time. However, the land existed and I walked the area. Does that clear it up?

I’ve walked the old Steel Mill site before it became Atlantic Station as well just FYI.

We (the ATL crew) tend to find the negative thing in a sea of positive development in the city's core. Hell, when I moved here in 97, Midtown was barren compared to what it has become today. It was a disjointed business district pretending to be a destination.

Glenwood Park, West Midtown, old Fourth Ward, and Atlantic Station either didn't exist or were nameless due to a lack of development and notoriety.

Come on folks. Let's celebrate the positives.

Do I need to remind you of the SSP mantra:

Boys will be boys and bitches will be bitches
Let's hope none of you bitches get stitches.:
Do your shit, do your shit, do your shit.
Beside, who gives a f*ck about Christmas stuff.

Let's say the word actually was problematic; it's really just a journalist's choice of words. I could see if Tim Keane or people in community development or even private development said it...

For example:

Verena Dobnik from Associated Press used the term for the Hudson Yards development in New York.

It’s just a descriptor. What makes it problematic? They could say district, neighborhood, ward, area, zone, yard, station, park....so on and so on.

I'm not saying it is, as I don't think it is. But I just don't get how a random word in a BisNow article was grounds for Atlanta slander.

If I had the answers, I'd be part of the solution. We are light years from just 10 years ago throughout much of the city, though. Sites like this are becoming more common as the BeltLine opens up more former industrial tracts. And you really need to learn more about Glenwood. It didn’t take years to connect it, it opened being completely blended with its neighbors to the east on day one. Madison Yards has nothing to do with it, they're separated by a 10 lane expressway.

Ok, fair enough. However, I was referring to the stand alone Chick fil a literally across the street from it.

But, that's not part of Glenwood Park. That's Fuqua, if I'm not mistaken.
