Looking around and reading his other recent tweets and their replies it makes me think perhaps it is a different project than the Orion Center and that there will be even more projects announced soon. He says he knows about 3-4 upcoming projects and says that this project he mentioned involves a huge company. Group Orion is barely getting off the ground, so that makes me think it's not the Orion Center he is talking about with the 3 million sq ft of space and 15,000 jobs.

The detailed plans for the Orion Center should be revealed early next month when it goes before the Environmental Planning Commission, so we won't have to wait too long to see if it is the Orion Center or an entirely different project that he is talking about.

I remember late last year the director of the city's economic development department said that there were a few big economic development projects soon to be revealed in Albuquerque. It seems that they are finally coming to light!

Yeah I love those pics, especially the last 3. Thanks for posting, Alex!

Curious what your thoughts are on the KiMo window shutters, in person. I realize why they had to put them up, but are they relatively cohesive/inconspicuous when they're retracted?

I don't like the shutters at all. They are down most of the time, even during the day. The city said they would only be down whenever nobody was actually in the building. But I think they should open them in the day no matter what, then close them at night.

They aren't offensively obtrusive closed or open, but they aren't as unobtrusive as I think they could've been or as the city said they'd be. The rolling mechanism and boxes are clearly visible and they were placed outside of the window frames. They also put different shutters over each segment of window or door openings, so it looks worse than it could've been that way as well. It reminds me of a big window covered in multiple short blinds instead of one custom-length blind that fits right.

They are a little see-through at night, especially if lights are on behind them, which looks much better than during the day. The KiMo gallery next door actually looks nice with the shutters down at night and it's lit up behind them. The KiMo itself looks okay at night but they usually don't light up the storefronts to help the shutters become see-through at night.

Edit: here's a story from KRQE last month talking about the shutters when they were beginning to be installed. You can sort of see how they are see-through on the KiMo gallery next door, whose shutter is a cream color, not bronze like ones on the theater itself.

More information came to light about Amazon's facility in the Meridian Business Park this past week. The project went before the Development Review Board for changes to its site.

http://documents.cabq.gov/planning/d...0-%20final.pdf

The changes include adding parking on two adjacent empty lots along Airport Drive. The overall changes also include additions and remodeling to the existing warehouse, which is already underway. The renderings confirm that it is an Amazon facility, apparently one of their new "Hub" locations and perhaps not a delivery station as I previously thought.

https://www.oregonlive.com/business/...across-us.html

A new 150,000 sq ft spec warehouse is getting ready to be built nearby. Perhaps it will end up being an Amazon facility as well. The marketing for the facility includes an aerial photo with the new Amazon Hub facility identified.

The Albuquerque Journal has an update on the apartments at Journal Center, which have apparently been renamed as Allaso Journal Center. The story says that Titan Development announced today that the project will break ground early next year.

https://www.abqjournal.com/1515402/d...announced.html

The building permit for the project was submitted in late September and is currently under city review.

https://posse.cabq.gov/posse/pub/lms...ctId=121627252

Allaso is apparently a new brand from Titan for high-end apartments. They have another project in the works near Tramway and Academy called Allaso High Desert with 281 units. It has been working its way through the city approval process lately and is currently before the Development Review Board.

Details about the Orion Center have now been revealed in their application with the Environmental Planning Commission. The entire site will encompass over 120 acres, which includes all of the former ACE property and additional parcels to the west across Girard Blvd. Phase one of the project will include over 5.5 million sq ft of building space. The space will include assembly, office and research uses plus hotel, food hall/commissary, daycare and parking structure. The project will create 2,575 high-paying jobs and the application states that they will begin hiring in 2021 in order to be fully staffed for the expected building completion and opening in 2023.

http://documents.cabq.gov/planning/e...2%20of%202.pdf

This is a huge win for Albuquerque! The number of high-paying permanent jobs plus the construction jobs for about two years and the amount of private investment in the city by Theia Group/Group Orion is just awesome!

I think this also means that it isn't the Orion Center that the rumored project with 15,000 jobs is referencing, which means an even bigger economic development project is on the horizon for the city!

Combo building (office, research and fabrication space), 1.2 million sq ft, 8 levels, 168 ft at its highest point, 148 ft to the main roofline

Parking structure, 2,100 parking spaces, 8 total parking decks, six structural levels above ground with one below, 90 feet at its highest point, lined on its east side by the hotel and food hall/commissary structures

Hotel, 85 rooms, six levels, 95 feet at its highest point

wow! very impressive.

Was wondering about the group backing/building the project. Any news/info on them. They must have very deep pockets?

Very good question and that's the great unknown right now. I know I'd never heard about Theia Group before. I imagine they are legit and have adequate backing and the capacity to get this project built. But companies promising big things then not delivering isn't unheard of before. We have the Foxconn debacle in Wisconsin to point to as a recent example.

There's also no saying whether Group Orion will ever be successful in their satellite endeavor even if they do get all this going. Locally, we have Eclipse Aviation as an example of a company with great promise that never fully realized its potential. But we have to take a chance. No truly successful city has ever not taken a big gamble like this to move themselves forward.

What gives me hope and confidence in the project is that they don't have a nebulous timeline or that this isn't being proposed in a phased manner over several years. We should know by early next year whether they will actually start building all this stuff.

Are they launching space vehicles from the SunPort? Im trying to understand what exactly is being built in this enormous cavern of space.

Well. We will see- here’s hoping! They may be backed by government money- here and abroad

As far as housing is concerned, I really envision high density downtown to prevent more sprawl. Kinda get the feeling our mayor is not really fond of high rises, though. Maybe I’m wrong

It's a network of satellites that they will be building and transporting from the facility, presumably to a place capable of launching them into orbit or to hitch a ride on a space vehicle to be deployed into orbit. Perhaps to Spaceport America or White Sands here in New Mexico.

The company in its application and presentation to neighborhood groups only stated that they chose Albuquerque because of the ability to build the facility quickly, the quality and capability of our existing workforce in aerospace, and the ability to attract new workers based on quality of life and low cost of living.

In looking for information about Theia Group I came across a few items which details more of what they are planning, including an authorization from the FCC last year to proceed with their project and build 112 satellites for their operation. It says it is for global imaging, which will be the highest resolution ever available.

https://www.fcc.gov/document/fcc-aut...onstellation-0

Here's a post on Reddit which hasn't yet generated discussion but which gives a cost of more than $10 billion for the entire endeavor. It talks about how difficult it is to find information about the company so far.

https://www.reddit.com/r/satellites/..._realtime_and/

In the application to the EPC it says that they will have an introductory news conference with local and state leaders soon. I imagine that's when we will get a cost figure for the construction in Albuquerque.

Here is information about patents Theia Group has received, all having to do with satellites.

https://patents.justia.com/assignee/...p-incorporated

Here is their official website, which still doesn't offer much detailed information.

Satellites, especially on what I grok on the smaller scale of the Orion variety, are small pieces of equipment relatively speaking to the size of the hangar area proposed in this document.

The access to the SunPort and size of the facilities suggests there's additional space launch vehicle construction beyond the satellites themselves.

Good stuff for ABQ, this sounds big whatever Orion is doing.

The pedestrian bridge over 4th Street at Alvarado Square has been removed. The work was done over the weekend. It was removed because the county says it discovered that the structure was weakened by rust and in danger of collapsing. The structure spanned the street for about 40 years and connected Alvarado Square to a parking structure across the street.
