I was looking to get some pics of 1090 West Pender and noticed this new mural on Thurlow Street.

“Dreamweaver” at 1055 Eveleigh Street (at Thurlow)

By Lauren Brevner and James Harry

“The concept of this mural design is centered around community and solidarity with two female figures standing back to back clothed in a Salish blanket. The image as a whole is referencing the design of traditional Salish blankets to speak to an ongoing series of our works called “weaving culture, weaving spirit". The main color palette is tumuth which is a red ochre pigment traditionally used in Salish art and design, black, beige and some minor copper embellishments. This colour palette is very traditional and will again reference the art that comes from that land where this mural is being painted.”

Love that. Amazing way to make dead wall space come alive.

Cool.

The woman on the right looks a lot like Micaela Coel.

Looks good.
They should have painted the angled walls to the side as well for completeness.

They painted them black I guess to make the mural stand out.

I saw this the other day - it’s really striking. Hoping that the new hydro pole just to the left is an indication that the one directly in front of it is coming down.

It's weird they installed two of them to the left of that old pole with a bunch of new transformers to service the construction pit. And that was few months ago so I doubt anything will happen to the original one.

i see there is underground electrical being fed from the original pole. anyone walked past this and taken a look if the new pole as a pilaster around the base to allow for feeding from the new pole? that would be an indication.

Is there a limit to the number of transformers you stick on a single pole?

it has to do with the # of wires on the pole. i.e. this pole is 3-phase (3 wires) therefore there are 3 transformers. there are some single-phase areas left, but that's in low density SFH and you'll only see 1 transformer there. that's generally why most poles have bundles of 3. its rare to see a # of wires not divisible by 3. they don't really build single-phase anymore since it has limits on how much power can be delivered, plus 3-phase is more stable and i highly doubt there is any single-phase downtown.

generally you'll only see transformers where the power is being taken and going somewhere; i.e. to a property/customer/etc. that pole for example goes underground hence it has the transformers since underground transformers are huge and expensive.

from what i can tell in the photos, there's been a lot of changes going on with regard to the development. my guess is they'll underground everything adjacent to the property. its actually a lot more complicated to deal with hydro poles than people would realize. they take a lot of work/planning to move around. i would be curious to see the schematic of the area to see where everything goes.

ahhh they edited out the hydro pole! that's why the photo made no sense. (the top is still visible above the mural)
