Someone purchased 149 Broad St on Sept. 8. I can only assume they're demolishing it.

Excavation is happening at the old bank of Nova Scotia site off of Main Street North. This project appeared to have paused after the first wave of COVID-19 picked up in March.

Hundreds of new apartment units on the way in Saint John

The municipality has approved 250 residential units so far this year, with another 250 in the approval process.

City has identified six intersections for potential roundabouts:

Ashburn & Rothesay Road
Woodward & Boars Head
Manawagonish & Gault
Sandy Point & Foster Thurston
Millidge & Somerset
Simms Corner

Nice to see SJ enter the 20th century of roundabout discussion but disappointing to see some councillors still thinking there's no money available for such items.

I think Woodward & Boars Head would be the easiest and most straightforward of all of these to implement first.

It seems very pointless to change Ashburn & Rothesay if there's still going to be another stop light 10 metres away from it. You'll just get traffic congestion in the circle itself.

People have been talking about the redesign of Simms Corner for decades. I'd dare say that this intersection is less busy now - even if there hadn't been a pandemic - than it ever has been.

City planners waited it out and saved taxpayers some money

It's not horrendous until you factor in the crosswalks that are blindly around the corners. Making the area more pedestrian friendly would do wonders

I agree with this. It's not easy crossing on any of the streets except for maybe the south crossing. It's a pedestrian nightmare.

Makes me wonder how many people are travelling west from the north end or vice versa. If you're going Uptown or beyond from the west side it's easier to simply take the Harbour Bridge...it's probably fair to say that Simms was busier when there were still tolls on the bridge. I think going north from west via Simms may only make more sense if you're going to the Regional/UNBSJ.

I know whenever i'm North I usually end up taking Harbour Bridge to go just about anywhere west. Simply quicker and easier. Maybe an updated, roundabout Simms would encourage more people to take that route but I doubt it.

A little bird tells me the lot just east of Tin Can Beach has been sold (or will soon be) and a ~100-unit apartment building is planned. Concrete pad construction to avoid disturbing brownfield contaminants.

Forgive my lack of construction knowledge. That would mean that it would have to be low rise with a concrete pad?

Pretty incredible how many recent sales there have been east of Wentworth. Worth keeping an eye on.

This four story apartment building on Technology Drive in Saint John was bought by a numbered company in British Columbia for $1.67 million in July.

Out-of-province investors have purchased dozens of apartment buildings in New Brunswick this year, both high end and low end. This well-worn six unit building on Princess Street in Saint John was bought for $170,000 by a BC company in August.

People are VERY upset a bunch of dilapidated buildings are going to get a new lease on life. If they aren't complaining about stagnation they're complaining about growth.

That one on Charlotte and Duke could be beautiful if they spent some money on the ground floor. There was a commercial tenant there in recent memory. With the nonprofit renovating the building across Charlotte this would really benefit that corner.

The place on Princess is derelict and hasn't been occupied in years. Not worth paying $170K for the land, so they must plan to renovate. It's 6 units IIRC.

I was reading council agenda and saw a rendering for a 65,000 sq ft Health and Social Innovation Centre at UNBSJ Campus. Has anyone else heard of this!
If you google “Saint John Agenda”, then click on “Agenda and Minutes”, then “Common Council” down arrow, then Oct 26th PDF agenda - it’s on page 179
If anyone can grab and post that photo that would be great
