They'll wait until the debt is substantial and then make a deal to pay pennies on the dollar, move the assets to a holding company, sell the brand to a friend, reopen under a different owner, and keep on trucking.

This is not that alarming, IMHO, these are not prime locations and are not their top performing locations in the Montreal area, but probably their worst. I think HBC is playing hardball and is actually doing this to get out of certain locations/leases and honestly I don't blame them, those rent numbers are ridiculous, I don't think these locations should even be open. Centre Laval?! Who needs that when you have Carrefour Laval which is 5 minutes away, no need for 2 stores. Everyone is fighting hard to stay alive in the retail world nowadays; tenants and landlords.

HBC is never coming back to Moncton, which means we need a TJX store at Champlain like yesterday; either a Marshalls or Winners, we are in dire need for a 3rd location in Moncton, this should be pursued like their life depended on it and it does. We are seeing these stores being added to malls everywhere, while in the past they were almost only found in big box plazas. Let's get this done Champlain! Stop chasing brands and chains that nobody wants or knows anything about.

I'm a 50 yr old guy who only steps into the mall once a year. I often do go to Winners on Plaza blvd looking for random deals. However, I do find our store the craps compared to the Winners in Montreal. Seems like Moncton only gets the left overs of what these big city stores can't sell.

I would welcome a store in the mall in hopes they pack in the merchandise with better stuff than the Plaza location. As for Marshall's, never been. I always thought this was a 100% women store.

The men's selection at Marshalls is fair, but any store has more stuff for ladies than for gentlemen in general.

They will do great since there's nothing like it in Elmwood area. Also looking at their website, looks like it will be the first in NB

Construction has apparently restarted on Planet Fitness in the Mapleton Plaza.

Our local CF mall replaced the bottom level of a 2 level Target with a combined Marshalls and Homesense store a couple years ago. It seems to be doing well. I'm not sure if Winners was a consideration, from either side, although the mall didn't really have a large enough spot for them anyway.

As for Jiffy Lube, they are my go to place for oil changes and tire swaps. Especially the one with the car wash and the self-detail centre. I've had a few times at Mr Lube that annoyed me and made me search out a new place, and Jiffy Lube is it.

A couple retail news/updates (info is from Retail Talk & Share):

A new tenant is setting up shop at the former Ardene unit at CF Champlain. According to chatter apparently Country Lane will be returning to the mall and will be taking this unit.

With the return of Country Lane and with some other "lower/mid-tier" shops coming soon like Labels and Designer Depot, (both owned by the same company as Fairweather), it seems like CF is relaxing/giving up on their ultimate vision of making Champlain Place a "high-end fashion destination". Which is understandable given the current situation in the world and retail. At least some vacancies will be filled again.

Also speaking of vacancies, earlier today I was looking at the recently updated mall floor plan online and noticed Maritime Travel is now marked as vacant. The mall's website also no longer lists/shows them anymore. And I looked at Maritime Travel's website and the mall location is gone from their branch locator. The only Moncton area locations that shows is the Main Street one and Riverview one. Did it permanently closed at CF Champlain?

And a new tenant is coming soon to the newly constructed unit between Giant Tiger & Discounters at Mapleton Plaza. Construction work is currently happening at this spot.

More to the above post. I've looked at the mall website and floor plan again today and noticed Eckō Unltd is also gone and marked as vacant. Anyone have any insight to this (as well as Maritime Travel) both being marked as vacant and removed from the mall's website?

Update: Someone on Retail Talk & Share NB has given some info regarding Maritime Travel:
Quote:
"We are clients of Maritime Travel and they advised us that they were closing at the mall and looking for another location. For now they are working from home."
Source: https://www.facebook.com/groups/16905026...830283949665?comment_id=2862832527282774

So it appears Maritime Travel is closed for good at CF Champlain. Now I wonder about Eckō Unltd?

CF seems to remove these stores from their mall maps whenever leases have expired and are being renegotiated. This does not necessarily mean that the store is leaving. ECKO was still there the last time I checked, but that was several weeks ago.

A source has advised me (on good authority) that the dollar store moving into the former Skyzone in the Champlain Plaza will indeed be Dollarama, probably relocating from their standalone building in the Atlantic Supersore parking lot.

I saw some people in hard hats around there the other day, so I expect interior renovations will be happening very soon.

This will be a much better location, I’m sure it will be a good traffic driver for the second phase of Champlain Plaza.

Indeed - certainly a better business driver than Skyzone was.

No offence to Skyzone, but a trampoline park offers precious little synergy with surrounding businesses. On the other hand, a customer popping into Dollarama is much more likely to check out Rens Pets next door, especially if Bowser just happens to be in need of some dog food...……..

Word is that the location at 105 main will be staying and this will be another location the 2nd in Dieppe and 8th in the greater Moncton area

Checked out Epoch Chemistry on St George today. What a beautiful addition to the city. Inside they gutted the entire building, exposing all the brick interior and the massive 12 person table they have for coffee tastings is made from reclaimed local barnwood.

You can do a 4 course coffee tasting (think of it almost like a beer flight) where the owner will explain the coffee origins, the preparation and tasting notes. If you want to learn more about coffee definitely check this place out. There's nothing really like it in all of Atlantic Canada. They are supporting a ton of other local businesses and roasting their own beans for purchase, as well as selling premium beans from around the world that are direct trade only.

if you want to expand your coffee knowledge check this place out!

Sounds interesting.

Maybe they could open a second location sometime in the former Starbucks on Main Street (once the pandemic is over).

I believe their long term vision is to open a full coffee shop, but they made some adjustments with the ongoing pandemic to just do tastings by appointment (up to 12 people) and sell the beans. They also have a subscription delivery model that is tailored to whatever coffee taste you prefer, with a mystery bag of beans included. Delivery in the Moncton Area is free of charge and is done by the owner himself.

They feature drinks of the month where everything is made from scratch, so for example a pumpkin spice lattee, but they went and bought pumpkins from Belliveau Orchard to make the flavouring. Next month is a peppermint lattee made with freshly grown mint. Its all very unique, like a fine dining for coffee drinkers.

Their advertising has been strictly word of mouth and social media at the moment.

Nice synergy with places like Dolma Foods, Notre Dame de Parkton, Landromat & India King all nearby.

St George Street is starting to get hip!

Main Street on the other hand is backsliding during the pandemic...……
