More info copied-and-pasted from a Valley Metro construction update email I received today:

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE WEEK OF August 31, 2020
Construction has begun: Northwest Extension Phase II light rail project construction began on Monday, Aug. 24. The initial work is exclusively third party utility construction.
Dunlap Avenue between C Street and 24th avenues (north side): Salt River Project will be starting the relocation process for underground utility lines on Dunlap Avenue between C Street and 24th avenues. Westbound Dunlap Avenue will have one lane restricted daily. Traffic restrictions will be in place 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Aug. 24 through late Sept.

Other Area Projects
The Arizona Department of Transportation is constructing improvements to the cross street drainage system along the I-17 frontage road between Greenway Road and Dunlap Avenue in Phoenix. The purpose of the project is to improve the drainage facilities that remove storm runoff from the Greenway, Thunderbird, Cactus and Peoria cross streets, helping to reduce the potential for flooding at the I-17 overpasses. This work will close portions of the I-17 south- or northbound frontage roads through 2020 and into 2021.

Kudos to Jessica Boehm for noting that as drastic as a 50% ridership drop may sound, it’s much smaller than what’s been seen on many other systems like the NYC subway and BART.

Valley Metro orders more new rail cars. With this latest order, the total fleet size will increase to about 75 cars. It started with 50 back in 2008.

Question on the station that will be near Souper Salad. Are thy going to remove the mid-frontage road exit/entrance in front of Souper Salad for the station?

Not to my knowledge. I think it's far enough north of where the track will go to avoid a conflict.

That's good to hear! I really hope they extending more light rail service. Right now, they haven't receive approved I-10 West and State Capitol extension yet.

I don’t think there was any design, the cityscape plaza itself will “act” as the place where you switch between north/south and East/west lines

As far as I can tell there isn't much additional infrastructure planned to create the "hub" other than three new stations surrounding CityScape.

The Van Buren bike lanes project had been cancelled in favor of repaving and re-striping the street as-is. Apparently, neighborhood opposition was strong enough to persuade the city to decline the federal funds involved.

This was coming for awhile. Council approved a fluffy ambitious bike master plan, but can't handle the fire when it comes time to implement, especially when vehicle travel lanes are removed. This is why 3rd St has moved at a glacial pace. I think that one will ultimately happen (because it should have decent usage), but the rest won't. The bike master plan isn't worth the paper it's written on. Interests of property owners, auto-oriented businesses and the driving public will continue to steamroll active transportation improvements if they are in conflict.

I own a fair amount in Garfield and I was at two meetings in support of the project, must have been 2017 (?). Honestly thought it was a done deal, there were a few guys opposed to this, though. Someone from Chicanos Por La Causa was there and a couple of developers were there in opposition. Nothing too wild, though.

This is exactly why I continually tell you guys it's not confirmed until you see construction happening. I know it upsets people when I do that, but this is why. You get excited about something and then the disappointment 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 the life out of you. Better to tell yourself "it might happen" and then if it does you can feel really happy.

You're absolutely right. Believe it when you see it. The Council deserves a lot of criticism here. They touted the plan as a done deal (I would presume it had community input), and then hid behind these new input mechanisms to walk it back (Osborn and Missouri have also been shelved). I think the composition of the Council over the last 3-4 years has also led to less enthusiasm for active transportation. The Mayor is really the only one who cares. The rest of them are pretty soft.
