Thank-you for not buying a Tesla. I can't believe how many are on the streets of Vancouver. Especially white Tesla Model 3's. I see one every 2 minutes when I'm out driving.

Tesla was more expensive and I don't like Elon Musk. Also Hyundai has a great warranty.

There was a time when I would drive into the city and would see a nice car at every intersection. Not anymore. Its probably not related, but it seems to have coincided with the release of the Model 3. And like you said, these 3s are usually in a boring colour like white. It's not a good looking car - especially when outfitted with the cheap aero wheels.

I've seen a lot of matte flat black Teslas, they look chalky. Is that a Factory finish or something people do aftermarket?

they look like this no reflection from the paint at all

It's an aftermarket vinyl wrap. They've been around forever.

Definitely the new status symbol for the "everyman" in Vancouver. Was a bigger deal of course when people could only have the Model S.

I've heard that a lot of M cars last only one year with their original owners because of that very issue, especially in cities with harsh road surfaces.

The Model 3 originally had black as the free color, after a while that shifted to white.

The base model that qualifies for the Federal and provincial rebates in BC is a pretty attractive value. That and the fact that you can actually buy one. A neighbour of mine was on an 8 month waitlist for the Kona.

I would be surprised if that is the case, seeing how commonplace they are in Vancouver. You just need to know what you are buying when going for a fully-fledged M car. It is a performance car that is at home on track just as much as on regular street. I mainly notice the difference since coming from a non-M car and the more I drive, the less I even notice it.

It's hell of car to drive and I am really loving it. Incredible to have so much performance (and sound!!) in a SUV form and really happy that I went with the top of the line Competition model!

My operative phrase being "cities with harsh road surfaces". Vancouver's not that bad, in a Canadian context. Toronto or Montreal? Edmonton? My comment was largely based on people I'd talked to, who mentioned all of the "bonus salary" M cars there, and how so many get ditched after one year of Toronto roads.

The worst part is all the utlitly trenches dug across roads for new developments, and never properly patched and levelled. It is exacerbated by the fact the CoV does virtually no total road resurfacing, as opposed to somewhere like Richmond which has a regular program of arterial resurfacing.

Downtown has some pretty awesome sinkholes that I'm pretty sure have been left as-is, to act as de facto speed bumps.

The Model 3 is starting to freak me out with its ubiquity in Van.

Reminds me of Demolition Man.

Yup. We have no need for two cars, so X3M Competition combines the practicality of a SUV with sportscar performance. I was originally considering to keep our 2017 X1 and getting a convertible to accompany it for sunny days, but that plan made no sens do to how little we actually drive.

I agree that our roads are overall in good shape although you can find bad patch work anywhere. Vancouver could be slightly worse than the suburbs due to so much construction always messing the smooth paving.

It's a while since I have been driving in those other cities but do remember Montreal highway being in much rougher shape. Our mild winter definitely help us with few cars using studded tires. I just bought new Nokian winter tires and went for the non-studded version like previously. Anywhere else in Canada I would likely go for studded tires due to icy roads.

Im pretty sure its way worse in a place like Sweden. Thats where the up take of electric vehicles has been much higher for longer and pretty much all cars are Teslas. I hope there is more options soon to mix things up a little for people that want electric but also variety.

I believe you are thinking of Norway where tax credits have really helped adoption. I haven't read the same about Sweden where Volvo still rules the roads.

EV's hit 90% market penetration in Norway this summer.

I think it's about 30% in Sweden. The S60 PHEV is the top seller in Sweden right now.

I'm not sure I really get BMW's brand direction these days. They've all but abandoned many of their core segments. I get that your X3M has quite a bit of power, but why on earth would they call it a competition? Nobody would enter one into a motorsports competition. In general, cars with that high of a centre of gravity are banned from most motorsports.

The Tesla 3 has all but eaten the market segment the BMW 3 used to occupy, the small sporty premium sedan. BMW seems to have just let them have it.

34% sales of plug-in electric in Sweden in September. Details here.

how do the EV rebates work? they go to the dealer, I think, but if the price is advertised at $45,000 and there is a federal rebate of $5000 and a provincial of $2500 do they take $7500 of the $45,000 price or is it priced at $45,000 after the rebates?
