Black Star, you would have been pissed off if Ken demolished the building. Matter of fact, me and many others would have been pissed off as well. This is the price we pay to save a heritage building.

i’m tone deaf for something we started working with the city on more than three years ago? well, if not having a crystal ball capable of predicting a global pandemic three years in the future qualifies as tone deaf, than i’m guilty of being tone deaf..

if i owned one of those crystal balls, you wouldn’t be accusing me of being tone deaf, my house would be mortgage free, my estate wouldn’t be encumbered with personal guarantees worth more than my estate, and the brighton block would look just like the gem theatre.

The Brighton Block is being covered by the CRL, not by taxpayers.

Oh right - the same folks who railed against Rogers Place being paid for by taxpayers.

Many business owners made decisions that are costing them dearly because of the pandemic.

Three-quarters of a million dollars can save many jobs in the city....better than going into private hands.

I wish I can ask the city to give me some money for my investment in a project that is currently losing hard earned money due to the pandemic.

In the end, under some false pretense, someone is robbing taxpayer money. This building doesn't add to the livelihood of Edmontonians to qualify for this much money.

The Brighton Block is a gem.

While the optics might be poor right now, the longterm value of this project is significant to both the owner, future tenants, COE and citizens of this city.

We have lost far, FAR too many historic and character buildings and so I am all for creative ways to make more of these happen.

why don’t you repost that and/or put it in writing over a real name and address?

i’m a pretty patient and pretty open and pretty public person and so is what i do and how i do it but, in the end, all i can say at this point is $crew you.

The EFCL's 100th anniversary project officially opened yesterday in Hawrelak. Quite a beautiful design and fun interpretive trail along the stream.

I saw the renovated library today, looks much better from the inside than it does out. That video gaming room is impressive!

I am a COE taxpayer and fully support this funding. I am also a Provincial taxpayer and was in no way supportive of the UCP's massive corporate tax cut, which reduced our general revenue.

Way to go Ken, glad to see you have support from Council.

Many of our Clients have been bit this year due to COVID (2 of our projects have heritage facade preservation as a part of our permits), and it's been a shaky year - but glad you're getting the support Ken from the City on this!

That pavilion at Hawrelak looks like solid prairie achitecture. Great addition. Thanks for the photos.

Frankly, this is probably among the best instances for using heritage money. First off, I assume there are strings attached. Municipal historic designations takes development rights away and because of that, the owner is entitled compensation. The development of site results in a piece of Edmonton's historic identity from being lost forever. That alone has significant value because it preserves a piece of the City's character and story. Not to mention that the site will generate much more tax revenue that it did before. Which is something the City needs at a time when we are all struggling. A quarter of million dollars invested may have been enough of an incentive for the project to happen - a project that creates how many jobs?

The new EFCL Plaza says it has performing arts space - which I can see but does it have fixed seating like the amphitheater and if so what is the capacity? The document linked a few posts back and recent photos does not mention or show the finished space clearly.
