Well, I would think that's only because you aren't a born and bred St. Louisian. Your views would likely be reversed, otherwise.

lio has a point. The most iconic views of cities tend to play up the most distinctive buildings. There's a reason every postcard shot of Toronto is off the lake instead of from Eglinton or wherever where you can't see the big, recognizable landmarks like the CN Tower, Skydome, TD Centre, Royal Bank Plaza, BCE Place, etc.

Same thing with Calgary. It seems like every inflight magazine feature about the place, or postcard or what have you always has one of two angles: from the SE with the Saddledome in the foreground, or from the NE with the mountains in the background. A photo from the NNW would not be easily recognizable as Calgary to people who don't nerd out about this stuff.

No crusade from me on the Calgary front either.

If you pulled up the numbers I'm sure there are significant differences in the number of 100m+, 150m+ building between these cities. Doesn't make the broader point wrong.

Also long time lurker here, glad to make my first post!
Calgary does look significantly bigger... when the two are put side by side.

And... Welcome

To follow up on my example from earlier, I would be interested if anyone (really just out of sheer curiosity) would take the time to submit a skyline pic of one of the following four: Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, London (Ontario). Make it as tricky as you can. I'll try to see if I can guess which one it is, without cheating, and without having any reference point

(well, I just saw Cal/Edm pics, but that's not really that helpful, since any of these four will be quite a bit smaller.)

Well at least you can see the CN Tower, the dome, a bit of BMO and the top of BCE... if you're far enough away from shore.

No one, anywhere, said or even inferred that they are the two most dissimilar skylines in the world. Intellectual dishonesty, again.

To be honest at first glances I sometimes get Montreal and Calgary and/or Edmonton mixed up.

Have you no experience at all of how real-world conversations/debating usually goes? I was plainly just mocking (i.e. disagreeing with) your statement that the two cities have extremely distinct skylines. (And proving my point with pics.)

"Absolutely no one ever said they were THAT dissimilar, I merely said that they were 'extremely distinct'..."

Worst part is, I'm sure in your head, you're the one who's intellectually honest here

To be honest, i find they do look similar in those 2 photos. I see posts of these two cities all the time and still get the 2 confused when viewed from certain angles (at least until I notice obvious landmark buildings). Im surprised this is even a debate.

Skyline of one anonymous Eastern Canadian city:

The main giveaway for me is the rooflines. Calgary has a lot of oddly/distinctively-shaped towers like EAP and Banker's Hall. Edmonton's highrises are mostly simpler and boxier in comparison, very "modern" vs. Calgary's "postmodern". The photo in question obscures a lot of this but the landscape, the river, the absence of highly-visible bridges, and the colour/texture scheme of the smaller highrises give it away as "definitely not Edmonton".

Huh. Who'd have thunk that without any of the iconic landmarks visible, people might be "way off"! Even on a skyscraper site!

Thanks for your participation in the experiment, BTW

Just the fact that you can name these towers pretty much outs you as a Calgary expert, so yeah, of course, you would be able to tell. And as mentioned earlier, I never doubted that Albertans wouldn't be fooled - it's their cities. Similarly, I can guarantee MonctonRad and FrAnKs won't be fooled by my pics above.
