Signage down at both Safeways at Pembina and McGillvary and at Sargent and Maryland/Sherbrook. Not sure about the latter but the former has signs saying it's closing on September 26.

Are they becoming Freshcos?

Tuxedo Safeway started renos. I hope it's not changing brands. But then again, I would get over it pretty quick. Does anyone know?

It's staying a Safeway.

Seems the Safeways are trying to go a little more upmarket while Sobeys goes down closer to Superstore. The Osborne Village Safeway put in a pretty extensive co-branded healthcare section.

The glass is going in on the podium of 201 Portage facing P&M. Looks pretty awesome, floor to ceiling glass. It's small tweak but a dramatic difference to what that corner will feel like. Full views into the second floor. It also does appear like a door is being put in directly facing the intersection.

Also the render on the new northernmost hoarding has images of a lobby bar, on the left side when walking in from the plaza.

^^Too bad for me, I kinda like the brown brick better. I remember the last reno when they added those stucco accents to the brick.

Does anyone have renders of that grocery store in St. Norbert? I saw the site last week, and it might actually be nice looking retail (but I don't know what the finished product will look like).

The stores definitely have a different look, but it's a weird approach to take given that the product offerings are identical with identical pricing. What is the point of maintaining both brands?

Yes, the new look is sort of hideous, but it will match the rest of the mall better (but I think the updated exterior of the mall is fairly hideous, so there you go)

That is bizarre. Seemed for so long Sobey's was aiming to be higher end. I am not so suer it is going down market. Freshco is more like Superstore..4 more conversions to add to the current 2. That reno in Tuxedo remains Safeway & has the new corporate Safeway look. I personally am happy to see some lighter colours & tired of the dark brown brick.

Is Sobey's actually going down market? Seems to be the same as they also were. Safeway stores definitely had an up class vibe compared to Sobey's. Dim lighting, better finishing. Fresh Co is obviously the lower end store.

What's the actual difference though? Not pricing from what I can tell. Although I don't pay super close attention.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but does anyone know what is going on behind Circle K strip mall on Chancellor Dr at Pembina? Driving in piles on a narrow stretch of land that has sat empty forever. Didnt look large enough for anything

FreshCo is aimed right at NoFrills, not Superstore.

TOD.

haha I have no idea though. Seems like a decent spot for apartments or condos.

I think I remember seeing on here that it's going to be a 4 or 5 story seniors residence

It seems Safeway and Sobeys are basically interchangeable now, or pretty close to it. One of the biggest differences before was the "program" or ready to eat foods and in store baked goods. For the most part it seems they are fully integrated now, mostly using the old Sobey's program. The private label goods have also been converted to Sobey's.

The biggest differences post-reno is Safeway has a more obvious natural food section and they are adding a fairly large skin care/makeup section, possible a concession (rental to an outside company). The other big part of the reno seems to be removing the US-based "lifestyle" branding in favour of something unique to Safeway Canada. It used to be you could walk into a Safeway or Von's in the USA and it felt just like a store in Canada. Heck they could even look up your Canadian Safeway Club Card!
