Mid-rises should have been build there instead. I mean, this is right next to Griffintown where most new buildings are 15 to 20 storeys.
Many North American cities had developments like this during the crappy era of the 1970's-90's.

I think this style of development is distinct from the phenomenon of tiny 1920's bungalows next to 200 m office towers.

Saint John NB is one city that has a lot of odd urban vistas with combinations of architecture you wouldn't normally expect. It is big enough and old enough to have had major commercial buildings in the mid-Victorian era and office towers, but grew so slowly that you can find semi-wilderness next to 100+ year old neighbourhoods, weird pockets of 70's or 90's development, etc.

I'm guessing that Calgary's truly historic residential neighbourhoods (I'm thinking like closer to 100 years old) stood on what's now the office district and the Beltline. Looking outside those areas, I don't see much in the way of historic neighbourhoods.

Would have been nice if they saved a few stretches of the old homes in the Beltline (north of 17th Ave). A cool reminder of what the area once looked like. Such as we see in the West End and even the industrial area in Mt. Pleasant.

The only major outlier I can think of is the townhouse complex at the bottom of the cliffs in Sunnyside probably built in the 90s, and possibly a handful post-war bungalow's that replaced dilapidated houses between the 40s and 60s.
I don't have a source. It was based on a quick Google Streetview tour of a few neighborhoods around downtown Calgary. The architectural style is different from what I know in Quebec and Ontario so I can't be sure, but a few areas seemed to be early post-WWII in Calgary.

The City of Ottawa has a website called geoOttawa. On the website, you can see zoning, parks, public facilities, current and future transit lines... But the coolest part are the satellite images that go all the way back to 1928, so we can see the development of Ottawa and Gatineau over close to 100 years.

Does any other city have this type of website?

Which satellites would have taken those images in 1928?

Royal Canadian Airforce WWI fighter?

Ok, so aerial photos might be more accurate for the earlier ones. I didn't want to confuse an aerial skyline sot with a satellite image that's more of a map view.

Although it's become commonplace to use the term "satellite image", virtually all current high res views we see on sites like this and on Google maps are actually aerial images. It's a LOT cheaper and more accurate to do aerial surveys then comprehensive true-colour satellite imaging at that resolution. When you zoom out far enough on google maps it transitions to actual satellite imagery.

Just a weird pet peeve of mine that's remained many years after studying this in aerospace engineering!

Very cool site though.

A biscuit is a cute, sweet, or pretty girl (think cookie.)

Calling a guy (probably a guy because this is skyscraperpage) a biscuit is pretty much equivalent to calling them a dumb blonde. I expect better out of forumers, but the quality of posting has gone way down hill the last while.

I was looking at the Saint John picture and was like, "Why is it so blurry??" And then I saw the Edmonton picture.
