No, I mean that cops are far more valuable to society than pro-anything players but you knew that. I don't care how good athletes are at their "jobs". They play a game. I have no problem with people who want to spend their lives playing a game for a living but in terms of their value to society, if somebody is breaking into your home you don't call the Goldeyes.

Look, if people really believe there's a better way then fine, let's do whatever that is. However, these calls to "defund the police" are just plain idiotic. They remind me of that lady who wanted to bike around the world to prove that people are inherently good. She was raped and beheaded somewhere in the war torn Middle East to nobody's surprise.

Cops aren't social workers and they're not supposed to be. I see we've forgotten why we have so many cops in the first place and it wasn't because we picked a number out of a hat. 30 years ago it was because of youth gangs. 20 years ago it was because you couldn't leave your car for more than 5 minutes and still expect it to be there. The entire time Winnipeg has remained either the murder capital or a close second among major cities in Canada.

So if our tax money has to pay for anything, I'd rather it was cops than the Bombers, the Jets, some artist stringing dead rabbits up on a tree or whatever other fluffy stuff some people think is more important to society. If cops aren't worth the money then call an artist the next time a crime is being committed against you.

^ Cops are absolutely needed.

Cops all earning a 6 figure salary, plus overtime is a bit of a luxury Winnipeg cannot afford.

We could certainly stand to move some of the funding from Police to better address the root causes of a lot of the calls they end up taking - addictions, social programs, youth programs, community centres, etc. etc.

Considering our trees don't have leaves on them for half of the year, I wish we had way more evergreens lining our streets. I was just in Edmonton and marveled at the thick canopy of evergreens lining Whitemud Drive (a freeway) through the southern part of the city. Imagine an evergreen lined Bishop Grandin Blvd!

I think you should look up what defund the police means. It doesn’t mean get rid of them. It doesn’t even mean that they shouldn’t be paid in the top five percentile wage earners, able to retire at 55 with a full and lucrative pension. Although maybe it should.

I do agree that the term defund the police was a terrible choice. It makes people think it means get rid of them. It does not in any way mean that.

For the most part pro sports teams are not taxpayer funded. They earn what we as a society think they are worth. It’s not like I buy my jets ticket and someone decides whether it should go to the police or Blake Wheeler.

The fact that Winnipeg spends more on police than almost any other city and is still the murder capital of Canada is the very idea behind the concept of defunding the police. It is a complete fallacy that more police equals less crime. That myth is precisely how we have gotten to a place where our city is broke and crime is rising. Spending money on the root causes of crime is the only solution.

Fun fact. A Winnipeg police officer with 5 years experience makes double the average salary for a CFL player.
The salaries of two Winnipeg police officers would pay the entire Goldeyes team salary.
Before pension.

That’s just for context. Pro sports salaries are not taxpayer funded. I’m not even sure if this debate is about pro sports salaries or defunding the police.

Police are vital. Obviously. And they should be well paid. But the idea that having as many police as possible is the only and best solution to crime should be questioned.

Also. What does this have to do with the Jets again?
The definition of insanity would be doing exactly what we have been doing the past twenty five years which isn’t working. All avenues need to be explored, if defunding the police leads to change then so be it!

This is exactly why you don’t defund the Police. The people who are most affected by a defunding are the poor and marginalized. The wealthy will resort to private police and security forces.

Yes the people behind defunding do mean abolishing; not just reallocating funding. The leftist manifesto includes abolishing prisons.

Lefties are usually always the first to call the police even for the slightest transgression against them, when a leftie becomes the victim of a real crime they change their tune real quick.

As with most left wing schemes more harm is usually done than good!

I know what "defund" the police means. It's a stupid term in the first place but if they don't like people understanding it by means of a dictionary then that's not my fault or problem. Words have meanings and the same people who use that term are using it in such a way as to give themselves all the latitude they want for it to mean whatever they want.

But that aside, there, you said it yourself:

Exactly..."for the most part". Well, no, that means they take money from the public trough. I don't care if people want to give every penny they have to support their favorite team. I don't even actually mind the public paying for certain aspects of pro-sports teams. What I DO have a problem with is people saying we should replace cops with the most useless people on the planet (namely social workers) because they cost too much but the same people saying we should also blow cash on a new arena. Don't pretend it's about fiscal management because it clearly isn't. Very few people here have any problem at all with the city blowing (and I mean wasting) public tax money on whatever pet projects we want to see get built but an essential service like the police is over-funded? So we want our cops to deal with belligerent drunkards harassing people in bus shelters with Teddy Bears and kind words?

I think most of the people who are calling for defunding the police have no experience whatsoever with the people the police protect us from. In fact, I'd wager that most of the people who think the cops are over-paid have never dealt with the harsh realities of the urban destitute. They're not just down on their luck or made some bad choices: Many of them are violent and destructive. Reformed? Sure, if it's actually so bad that we need it. I don't think it is and I don't mind paying cops a six figure salary to do something more productive than pushing a puck across some ice. That's my point: I don't care how good they are pushing that puck, that's ALL THAT THEY DO! How come we can't all dream of getting a million bucks a year to engage in our favorite pastimes? Because nobody wants to watch them but for a pro-team sport, we'll pay whatever we can. Well, I'd rather a cop shows up than a goalie when somebody breaks into my home.

For what reason does a cop with 5 years experience need to be paid over 100k a year? It's not to attract the top level talent that's for sure. That's the crux of the issue. The salaries are outrageous. Although police deal with stressful situations that can be dangerous. Overall stats show that police are not that dangerous of a profession. Per capita more people are killed in industrial accidents, construction accidents, etc that police being killed by a criminal.

This can literally be summed up with a good old fashioned “won’t somebody please think of the children!!!” Lol. In a province where two people working bring in an average household income of $68,500... paying constables $118,000 a year plus overtime and benefits, is just downright fucking bullshit. Why does someone making $35,000 a year have to have their disposable income shrink so some asshole cop can go build a $800,000 Maric home. Because the only people building maric homes right now are teachers, police, and a couple doctors, ohhh and that one jet that came back to Winnipeg. Really, how can someone living in Prichard farms or oakbank effectively police in a community they have zero connection to or respect for, I don’t care what kind of bullshit they deal with, everyone deals with bullshit. Rich people don’t give a shit about the poor, hence the rise in police brutality.

Honestly the non profit bear clan patrol has probably done more for safety and crime prevention in this city in the past decade than the police have in the last century.

Defund the police isn’t just about police officer and associated employee salary

It’s also the exorbitant additional costs - for example cops have side arms. Do they need M16s? Do they need bazookas? Why spend millions on those and the maintenance that is required? That’s the value in the criticism

So... I haven't posted here in almost a decade & only come visit a couple times a year to see what's up. But on this visit... wow. I just couldn't resist from taking the bait...

Some of these comments are coming from a place of so much privilege (mostly the classist, white variety) that you're clearly not seeing that you have a massive blind spot towards this discussion.

Have you considered that it's the cops that are quite often the transgressors toward these 'leftists' you're referring, so calling the cops is not even an option the way it is for you.

hmm... many of our urban destitute are violent & destructive, huh? stats please. Cause I'd wager that you watch & believe way too many cop reality shows / fox news BS that you have no clue what the reality is for minorities.

I can give you countless stories growin up in our humble town in the 80s & 90s, where the cops would come by & intimidate kids simply playin soccer in central park until they would cause a reason to arrest one of us on bulls**t charges that undoubtedly would get dropped days/weeks/or months later. Or making sure that if you're ever getting pulled over, to do it in a way that give you enough time to switch spots so that the white person (preferably girl) is in the driver seat by the time the cop makes it to the window. Or having them follow you for blocks when just walking around downtown like many of us urbanists do, till you have to ask them to stop.

I could go on & on, but my point is that when the cops are repeatedly & almost consistently the ones who are the aggressors towards you, your behaviour & attitude towards the authorities changes. Why would I support tax dollars funding grotesque salaries to the same folks who harass me? I'd rather have those funds directed to programs that get those urban destitute as you call them off the streets to become productive members of society. (Thus not needing as many high paying cops playing abusive babysitter to the less fortunate).

(Yes, that last sentence is intended to troll you)

This comment really has to be called out. First you resort to racism. Second you assume that everyone is stupid. ‘ The Cops were bugging us and we didn’t do nuthin”. This is such a rare instance that Cops go rogue. The vast majority of people who claim this are usually up to something most of time. Then the one time someone like that isn’t up to something it’s too late because the Cops know who you are or who you’re choosing to associate with and they are keeping an eye on you. There are all kind s of people who continuously look to cause problems; and race has nothing to do with it.

Increase training for the Police and bring back canine units; which should actually cost less.

Hi everyone, first time poster, long time lurker here haha. I haven't seen much updates for the TOD's along the rapid transit in the Fort Rouge area so thought I'd update. I was walking along the AT pathway along earlier this week and there's a couple projects under construction. Below is Fort Rouge Gardens as mentioned in the first post but called Lot 6 on the Ironclad website. About 3 weeks ago I had walked by and they were finishing the piling on site. Looks like some walls are starting to go in where the crane is.

https://imgur.com/NeXCbJV

And closer to Jubilee station there is an apartment or condo (not sure) block being built right next to the new townhouses. Looks like it going to be 4 storeys?? Does anyone have information on that?
