Drove along Pacific and saw a massive Scotiabank logo (the new one - all white and the globe is replaced by a big circle/dot).
It's on the lowrise across from Fresh St. Market. There's also a red 'Scotiabank' sign.

Saw that as well. Wondering if the one in Yaletown at Homer/Helmcken is closing.

Scotiabank seems to be on a huge bricks and mortar binge, which seems counterintuitive as more customers move to online banking. In addition to new locations, I noticed they also just spent a ton of money renovating their South Granville branch.

Banks must have a direct relationship with the government. They are almost like as stimulus tool for construction.

A lot more branch renos, and money spent in general, during down times.

This time no exception.

I think it's probably far enough away to have separate catchment areas.

I remember back in the 1990s BMO had a branch in the ShowMart Building (Smithe & Mainland, now SAP) and one at Georgia & Seymour, then they consolidated the 2 branches at 401 West Georgia. Years later, they opened a BMO at Nelson & Hamilton, a stone's throw from the old location and they retained the 401 West Georgia location (now moved next door).

I think that's a similar separation as those Scotiabanks and the Yaletown branch may serve businesses there.

The stairs were open so I went up and had a look around. It wasn't open yet up top to the little bridge.

Are the sprinklers for the wood facade a requirement or just an added safety measure? Maybe because it's an emergency egress route?

Looks very 70s.
Good eye on the sprinkers. Do you think a pigeon could stand on them and set them off?
The wood siding on the bridge looks odd as it makes it bulky and it's placed between a concrete bridge and a glass facade (the wood isn't very prominent).
The anti-climbing angled wood on the window sills looks silly to me.

PS - thanks - guess Scotiabank is moving to all white signs.

First thing that came to mind. Doesn't look good at all. Couple years down the road that wood will look even worse.

I'm pretty sure there's some really dumb reason why that angled piece of wood is there.

When someone misses grabbing the railing then falls onto the deflection of that angled woodwork instead of jamming their hand or arm on that ledge and or
stop people from setting or leaving their coffee or drinks when sitting on those top steps (Seating Stairs)

For the sprinkler heads, Wood or not it's an egress exit, it also keeps all that glass from shattering and impeding the exit.

I think it's to prevent someone from walking along the window sill.
But it's stupid looking because the sill isn't very long.

man, that really doesn't fit the building at all. the bridge connecting to the Granville St Bridge looks huge. they really should have gone for something more airy. it looks completely unrelated to the building.

i wonder how it will hold up in the rain here. i doubt it will get much direct sunlight to help prevent growth of whatever.

I don't think it will be. There are serrated metal inserts on the steps and the landing.
