it’s like they’ve screen grabbed google images or wire frames at random and just dropped them in. the chamber’s building got moved across the street and rotated 90 degrees (moving jasper ave north in the process), 9888 jasper and sun life were moved 3 blocks west and dropped kitty corner rotated and reversed... obviously done by someone who doesn’t know the city and not picked up by anyone who does.

The best example of that I've seen in some time was for a Cadillac Fairview proposal next to the Waterfront Station in Vancouver and in the background of the rendering, it was downtown Edmonton.

As some of you know already, I was never a fan of plonking a bigass tower in front of the Hotel Mac. I'm even less of a fan now.

The Edmonton Design Committee should be fired. There's the building next to the Hotel Mac, there's Manchester Square, there's the building west of the Brewery District - need I go on?

The multi-building Hat project by Cidex in Old Strathcona was at Design Committee in July. Positive news.

Motion of Support requiring an Administrative Walk-on
While the Committee is generally supportive of the proposed scheme, an Administrative Walk-on is required to further resolve the design of the public realm, in particular the internal north-south mid-block pedestrian link. The Applicant is requested to return to the Committee and present a revised design that further explores:

Ugh, one of my least favourite, most vague planner-isms, only one notch better than "spirit of place". I can't make that one up; it's for real.

Mainly referring to the easterly 1-storey section along 81st Ave that used to have a render of a warehouse, more or less, and now has a more contemporary power centre or commercial strip aesthetic. The tower 1-storey wrap-around podiums look very similar. I assume they are required by the area's requirements to use brick, but the frontage differentiation (is it 50' minimums for a single CRU?) it just looks like 1 long building, rather than say a stronger appearance of multiple individual CRU's. It's been ages since I've looked at the Strathcona policies, but after seeing Southpark go ahead as it did I... dunno.

Looks like it’s kind of a “T” or “L” shape probably to preserve views of hotel Mac? If something like this was built at jasper and 114 where one of Regency’s monstrosities is proposed, I would not mind at all. But for this location in front of hotel Mac it’s disappointing.

That's when I know that it is going too far... not everywhere needs to be everything.

Simple, well-designed is often much better than this or that.

I do think they are trying to emulate centuries old dutch architecture yes. And I don't like it. Slapping a parking lot in front is icing on the cake. Lelijk gebouwen!

Regardless, it's all good. Like I said, some people like it and some not. That's cool. I just happen to be in the latter category. Theres a new brewery setting up shop there, so I'll likely visit anyways. Cheers

Is it derivative? Sure, you see this kind of exterior all over the continent. Is it the Venetian? Hell no.
