Thanks.
Thought you had seen a sign for it.

Should be this one here with the "2" on it - but there's no signage on the hoarding like the other "coming soon" retailers.

Company that bought crumbling Steve Nash Fitness not making Amazing Brentwood Burnaby move

Chris Campbell / Burnaby Now
AUGUST 13, 2020

Quote:
That move appears to have fallen apart as the company that bought the now-bankrupt Steve Nash Fitness World says it doesn’t plan on moving into the Amazing Brentwood.

The Steve Nash Fitness World company that operated multiple gyms in Burnaby - on Lougheed Highway, just west of the Amazing Brentwood, in Lougheed Town Centre and on Kingsway in South Burnaby - recently had its sale approved by the BC Supreme Court to FW Fitness BC Ltd.

The NOW contacted the new Fitness World through its media contact, Avenue PR, and was told the company plans to continue on with the Kingsway and Lougheed Town Centre locations, but will not be moving into the Amazing Brentwood.

“Right now, Fitness World is waiting for licence approval for two locations in Burnaby,” read an emailed response. “The Amazing Brentwood mall is not on the list of clubs opening.”

That makes some sense. The leasehold improvements for the new facility would have been high.
What doesn't make sense, is why, then, they let go of the Steve Nash Sports Club down the hill (which started out as a Steve Nash Fitness World and could be converted back)? (maybe it's slated for redevelopment?)

The new owners may also renegotiate with Shape for a cheaper location at the mall, or maybe the business plan doesn't make sense if the condos and apartments above have an extensive gym facility.

.....I'm fairly certain that that location has been bought out by Trevor Linden's 'CLub 16' brand to be converted into one of their gyms (if you're referring to the one on Lougheed, a bit farther to the west closer to Gilmore).

....which also might have been a factor into discouraging them (the new Fitness World owners) from the Amazing Brentwood location one.
i.e. the close proximity to that old one and the presence of gym facilities in pretty much all the new condo towers coming up in the area - especially above the mall where they hoped to operate.
Most likely most of any new membership would have had to come from people from outside the area or not living in those towers, and the residents of that neighbourhood are already familiar with the old Steve Nash location on Lougheed as the resident gym facility.

I'm more surprised that they are still keeping the Kingsway location, but I guess on closer consideration, it does make a lot of financial sense for its location as the closest gym facilities to it in the immediate vicinity are much farther to the west on Kingsway (Goodlife Fitness at the Sovereign and the Anytime Fitness at the Old Orchard shopping mall, along with the one at the Bonsor Rec. Center) and to the East all the way farther back to Edmonds center.

So it's the perfect location for anyone living in that immediate vicinity of that Royal Oak area (even though, it's a little small).
Also, any renovation/re-branding costs would be way minimal given that they already were located there before unlike having to re-do an entire new location from scratch.

The question though is how Club16 got access to the location - either through breach/termination of lease (ie from the landlord) or assignment of lease and sale of assets (from Steve Nash).

They must think that the Kingsway and Lougheed Mall locations are good enough.
Like you mention, Kingsway is a great location - surrounded by older apartment stock.
It really could be that Brentwood area condos have large amenities so there may be reduced demand.
Also could be they are looking at a cheaper East Van (Grandview) location instead?

How are the temperatures at Brentwood tower 2 right now? A bit concerned it doesn't appear to have central AC, it must be boiling during these hot summer days!!

Yesterday when I was there the fountain wasn't working. However, quite a few clusters of people enjoying their cold beverage (myself included) under the umbrella shades generously provided by the mall. Nice atmosphere. Can't wait for more of the shops to open up.

The tinted windows should be able to cool down the interior of the units somewhat.

Judging by TAB 1 where every sun shade seems to be drawn, I'd say the residents want a little more cooling.

Seems like it was the landlords. There's a bunch of UFC Gym stuff going up for auction at Able from a Surrey location.

Quote:
Lawson said the company was approached by quite a few landlords of Steve Nash Fitness locations, all of which have been closed since mid-March. SNFW Fitness B.C. Ltd. – which operated more than two dozen fitness locations under Steve Nash, Crunch Fitness and UFC Gym brands – has not paid rent for any of its 32 leased locations as of April, when it began insolvency proceedings under federal bankruptcy and insolvency legislation.

That makes sense - thanks!
... and agreed, that given the changed circumstances, it makes sense that the revived Fitness World does not enter Amzaing Brentwood with the new Club 16 close-by (as well as the prevalnce of condo amenity gyms in the area).

There are a bunch of (low rise) condos in that Kingsway Steve Nash area that do not have gyms (did a walk through of one recently).

Not sure if this means anything but walking around the area yesterday there were several Club 16 staff trying to sign up new members and some pop-up signage right outside Basil Box

Not surprising.

Might as well get a jump on that membership drive ( - even in the midst of this pandemic paranoia -) while you still don't have any direct competition in the form of whoever will take the role of that fitness center in the mall (be it Fitness World or anyone else).

Imagine Shape would rather have a gym tenant within the mall complex rather than have people sign up for the gym down the road from them, but you first have to get that tenant and right now much like other businesses that involve constant physical contact with surfaces and close proximity with lots of strangers, it's not exactly the safest bet for a business to go into in this current climate and economy.

But people will always want to stay into shape (or a place to be able to go an burn off those shame calories from weekend partying) - especially in a place like Vancouver.

Yeah, it's the same as Fitness World or whoever having a table in a mall for sign-ups months before the facility actually opens
- i.e. a pre-sale, and depending on the type of membership, they could visit other locations.

Gyms are part of most malls' plans to cater to lifestyle instead of hard or soft goods retail.

I remember the renderings suggesting Equinox, but without a high end department store in the plans (the mall floorplans have deleted the department store) I expect the calibre of the mall has come down a notch.
Curious what the plan is now for the LCatteron-related luxury stores.

I walked around the mall yesterday, its really dead now, the food court is all boarded up now, there are no options to get food now except for the just opened Basil Box and the food trucks for however long they will last. Shape did the same at Lougheed, they used food trucks to fill the void until the new eateries was ready, from the looks of it the new food court looks nowhere near being completed and it was said to be completed by March 2020.

Anyway if retailers wanted a spot in the mall so badly there are plenty of spots in the existing mall that they could move into to get a spot. Unless they don't want to lease out the old mall and have plans for something?
