i don’t remember “heritage 80” but i do remember daon’s “project 80” and still have copies of some of the master planning...

I might have the moniker mixed up. It's the lands west of HWY 2 and south of the ring road, extending down toward the airport, going from foggy memory. It was a monster assembly back in the day. I thought it was Genstar but then again, this was back in the latter 70s and hey, foggy memory.

Another big land assembly back in the day was Nu West's proposal for the lands north of Highway 16, east of Highway 21 and Sherwood Park all the way to Secondary Highway 824 (and could have even extended further east to SH 830). I can't recall the name of that plan but remember pursuing through it. It was huge.

^^ This piece of land is part of what is now the residential area centered around Summerside. It's already more than 50% or so developed almost down south to 41 Ave SW.

That "Project 80" area structure plan posted is dated at October 1981. That area could well have begun development a lot earlier if it hadn't been for the NEP cutting short the oil boom in Alberta.

Very interesting, as it also includes the southernmost portion of the Mill Creek Freeway in it.

Neat how this plan shows 91 and 111 Streets as expressways linking up with Highway 2. I always thought 91 Street was overbuilt for its current use (though it was part of the planned Mill Creek Freeway back in the day as part of METS).

Oh yes, please bring back the run down furniture warehouse. My god you snobby pricks are tiresome. You want so badly for Edmonton to be this cookie cutter cosmopolitan metropolis that your blinded to development that is actually a positive change for the immediate neighbourhood.

Obviously COVID will mean that this development will probably not live up to its potential anytime soon, and pair that with a landlord who’s greediness is leading to a mass exodus from their other holding in the neighbourhood (The one with doughnut party, local omnivore...). It may be a while till this is leased up.

But it is really quite sad how Edmontonian’s insecurities and inferiority complex gets taken out on developments like this but we are completely ok with sprawling ugly cookie cutter suburbs with disgustingly boring Unimaginative retail... i can’t properly express here how pathetic this bombastic outrage really is.

Strange, because I've never heard anyone on here being completely ok with sprawling ugly cookie cutter suburbs with disgustingly boring Unimaginative retail. I'm fairly certain the sentiment around here is completely not ok with sprawling ugly cookie cutter suburban unimaginative retail.

You can still criticize "A" without immediately having to criticize "B" in the same sentence.

Some people like it, some people don't.

I personally believe there's nothing imaginative about this project. It's a ripoff/knockoff of something that was imagined 300 years ago already. Edmonton isn't a 700 year old dutch city. It's faux historical architecture. Kind of like what you see in China, disney land , vegas, or heck even what we've seen before in Edmonton.

It's OK to have criticism, and having one doesn't make you a snobby prick. I've spent a lot of time in the Netherlands, and their cities and history alongside their urban planning and architecture are close to my heart. So I feel my criticism is valid, and I'm not just shooting from the hip.

It's fugly. But then again, it's not my development nor my money.

Imaginative would be doing something original.

I obviously didn’t make myself clear as usual. I have a really hard time putting my thoughts into words.

I am not saying this is some amazing architectural marvel, I’m simply saying this is a well done little development that will hopefully animate this small stretch of road in an already amazing neighbourhood. I just find it frustrating that for some reason this has become the new Peregrine Point, Venetian, fox tower, etc for people to fixate on.

And this has nothing to do with Netherlands. Do you actually think this developer thought they were building something authentic that would pass for Northern Europe? I have never been to Netherlands but I have been to the capitals of every other Northern European country and it is completely useless and offensive to EVER put Edmonton in the same league as those Amazing cities. Comparing Edmonton to Northern Europe is like comparing apples to elephants.

Edit:I think this will still come across as offensive and unclear but I tried my best lol.

Imagine how the people in Manchester feel. �� As I have mentioned before this is a very bad idea extremely well done. I don’t see how anyone can be offended by it. The developer wants to rent to local vendors and this “attraction “ will bring in a lot more foot traffic than another ordinary strip mall.
