while i appreciate a touch of hyperbole as much as the next guy (and penalty publicly complain more than most), there is nowhere on jasper avenue - and arguably nowhere in edmonton- that compares with vancouver’s east hastings...

The only place that would be close-ish is 105 Ave in front of Boyle Street Community Services (and even that is a stretch).

perhaps but, as you noted, even that is a stretch. i've walked that block reasonably regularly on both sides of the street including accessing the boyle street community services building (not to obtain services but to pay for snow removal when they were doing that for us) and never been afraid. i wouldn't even drive down east hastings street with the doors unlocked and less that a full tank of gas.

Whenever we go to Van of course my wife, being Asian, must go to all the Chinatown markets in the area, some right along E. Hastings. Haven’t had a problem, yet. Lucky 97 isn’t much better though.

keefer and pender and cordova and powell - even hastings east of gore - aren’t the hell hole of hastings from main to carrall.

I’m more stressed out waiting for a bus in front of Commerce Place in the evening rush hr than I ever was on east Hastings. Transferred busses twice daily at Hastings and Main and walked that neighbourhood regularly between 2010-2015 and never had a problem. Day, night, whatever. People more or less minded their own “business.” Incidentally, felt Joyce area was meaner in a way than east Hastings.
I have regular altercations along Jasper in downtown. The low lives here are bolder, probably has to do with the shit winters and lack of sympathy.

Not to detract a construction thread further, but highly highly agree. Female colleagues that moved to Edmonton from Van feel similar (albeit less safe in general on all accounts at night). Haven't taken the train by the Coliseum lately but that was scary as hell every time and walking Alberta Ave or Beverly was dumb. I think it's the lack of people on the sidewalk that makes it more dangerous.

Taking buses, biking, walking around before and after shows at night and going into the "sketch" corner stores for after show for food it can be jarring but honestly I felt less safe at midnight in DT Edmonton because it's empty, and 10pm in Bed Stuy Brooklyn had me on the watch most times.

I agree with the sentiment that my 'threat sensors' are much more on alert when I walk certain parts of DT Edmonton than I do in East Hastings.

A few years ago, I was walking about doing street photography. In the back of my mind I was aware I was approaching the E. Hastings area but nonetheless I still stumbled into it.

I wasn't really unsettled. It was broad daylight though so that helped my perception of the area. The area was jarring for sure.

The feeling I had was if I walked through with a purpose I would be left alone.
In the end I was asked for change a couple times but my "sorry don't have" was just shrugged off.

Sometimes if I'm bold, I do walk the stretch of 101st north of 103rd/104th ave and the times I've had folks who do a 'fake out' on me or aggressively ask for change is too numerous to count.

Japser flanking 101st is also a bit of a disaster zone - as noted by some folks above. Visually the area is no where as bad as E. Hastings but it's not a pleasant area because our panhandlers are so aggressive. This discussion kind of blends itself to the reason why commerce put those "human spikes" on the bench. That corner was as cesspool even during broad daylight.

Interestingly, the area in front of Hope Mission while the area paints a grim image, I have found most folks leave you alone.

Downtown has a significant/growing/gang/organized activity that continues to be unaddressed and because of said activity, it brings along with it a lot of petty crime/damage/lack of safety.

That’s interesting. Why do you think it’s being unaddressed? Do you think the situation has improved since the 90s? I think so sometimes, new bldgs and facades but occasionally I get those ghost town vibes that take me back to 95.

It has changed, but sadly may be worse off at the moment.

Having lived Downtown for 15yrs, the last 1.5-2 have been the most challenging from a safety, respect, policing standpoint.
