Wonder if they thought about cooperating with Melnyk on converting CTC into winter water park. Like they have in West Edmonton Mall:

Maybe Melnyk, could think of one after the Sens move out of CTC

Reading this, I thought he was saying Al-Ottawa, like a middle-eastern theme...

Alottawatta now makes more sense when I read slowly.

Either would have been good!

Funny how I thought of that same idea as I drove past the Canadian Tire Centre yesterday! Here's an idea for you PROSLIDE:
  • Year-round use
  • Building shell already exists
  • Excellent location and visibility from the highway
  • Plenty of Parking
  • The building will probably be vacant in 5-10 years
  • Building could also fit a hotel and retail uses within the shell overlooking the waterpark
  • Roof could be replaced with a glass dome
  • Rink area could be a wave pool
  • Lengthy lazy river could wind through the removed "100 Section" area with tunnels through different themed areas (e.g. Amazon, Arctic, Caribbean", etc).
  • Zip lines and bungee jumping could be provided in the upper area
  • An aerial rope course could be provided near the roof
  • A family-friendly total entertainment complex!

.......................or.................

Turn it into a massive greenhouse/vertical farm and biodome which grows fresh crops in a variety of climate-controlled environments which would provide food for all of eastern Ontario and Western Quebec!
  • No pesticides required
  • No long-haul transportation of food
  • Ability to mass-produce exotic foods locally
  • Large roof excellent for capturing rainwater
  • Solar panels on roof could provide all neccessary electricty
  • Roof could be outfitted with Solar Tubes, showering crops with natural sunlight
  • Wildlife could be introduced in each climate zone to help cross-pollinate and establish a complete eco-system
  • Ancillary use could be a tourist draw, similar to the Bio Dome in Montreal.

Not sure if this has been suggested on here (or confirmed in any media), but I heard through the grapevine that Proslide wants to develop this water park in large part to use it as a "showroom" of sorts to prospective clients (theme parks around the world, etc.) The idea is that the the slides comprising this park would change at some frequency as the company's product portfolio evolves.

That is what was mentioned in the Ottawa Citizen story that rocketphish posted over the weekend.

I am not completely opposed to the idea of ProSlide working with Melnyk to re-develop the CTC but I believe ProSlide already owns the land where Alottawata is going to be.

What kind of concessions will they have to negotiate with Melnyk who owns the CTC and who has been very vocal (I don't blame him because he is a savvy businessman) about generating more revenue for the Sens/himself through different business avenues.

Is it better if ProSlide runs its own show and calls their own shots, in their own backyard? I guess that is something for Mr. Hunter and his team to decide.

4139 Moodie Dr (Alottawata Waterpark R&D Facility) | Proposed

ProSlide is proposing to construct an approximately 1860m2 (20,000ft2) research and development facility building, of which 465m2 (5000ft2) would be office space, on the south portion of the subject property. This facility will facilitate the design, prototyping, and testing ProSlide’s new water rides and emerging technologies.

The proposed facility is part of a larger plan envisioned by ProSlide for their Moodie Drive properties which would see the development of a water park on its adjacent property to the south. The research and development facility will be integrated with other proposed “back of house” operations of the planned water park.

The research and development facility and water park will both benefit from their colocation. ProSlide intends to use the water park to showcase the company’s most recent designs and water ride technology to the public and potential customers from around the world. Co-location of the water park and research and development facility will allow for rapid prototyping, testing and demonstration of new technologies to reduce turnaround time between project inception and market-ready products.

Plans for south end waterpark on hold, again

VITO PILIECI Updated: August 19, 2018

The developer of a proposed south-end waterpark said plans for the attraction are being put on hold, again, due to other business issues that are demanding his attention.

Rick Hunter, chief executive of Proslide Inc., said the much-anticipated Alottawata Ottawa waterpark will not open in 2019 as announced. The park is expected to be built on a 150-acre parcel of land near Bankfield/Brophy Road and Moodie Drive, just off Highway 416. The property has been cleared and contoured for drainage, and some pools have already been dug out.

This is at least the second time the opening date for the park has been pushed back by Proslide, which originally said the park would be open in 2010. The park was first announced by the Ottawa maker of waterslides in 2008.

Hunter said, business at Proslide continues to boom and it requires the full attention of his firm and all of its resources.

“In the last six years we’ve gone from 32 people in this Proslide office to 145. Our business internationally, has exploded,” he said. “This just takes priority.”

Hunter said, Proslide was key in providing waterslides to Volcano Bay at Universal Studio’s in Florida, which opened in May 2017. He said Proslide was also contracted to build slides for Yas Waterworld in the United Arab Emirates and Happy Magic Water Cube (one of the largest waterparks in Asia) in China.

“You’ve got to take care of that stuff,” he said. “You have to ask, ‘What are we capable of doing?’ Because you can’t do everything.”

Proslide also owns Mont Cascades in Cantley, Que. On Aug. 13, the government of Quebec gave Hunter $1.5 million to help with a plan to build four new ski slopes on the western side of the mountain. The $5.1 million expansion, aimed at attracting more Ontario skiers to the region, is Hunter’s main focus, at least for the time being.

However, Hunter said he is not giving up on Alottawata. In fact, he said, Proslide has now finished moving much of its research and development to the south-end site. He said the research and development facilities on the property will be a key ingredient to what Proslide plans to offer with Alottawata.

“We had three new product introductions last year. We have four new products coming out in the next year to two years. All of these things will have a very positive effect on Alottawata,” he said. “But, it’s just one of those things. It sounds negative. It’s not. As an entrepreneur, it happens and you have to make choices.”

Unlike previously, Hunter would not give an estimate about when he expects to finally open the waterpark.

“You know what’s dangerous about that, obviously, is failing,” he said, adding that he is aware people will be disappointed with the decision to push back the opening of the park. “I know that.”

When built, the park will be closer to downtown Ottawa than Calypso Theme Waterpark in Limoges. It’s an easy drive for people coming from Kingston and Eastern Ontario, and it will be 40 minutes from the United States border. Analysts have estimated the new waterpark could attract as many as 220,000 new visitors to the city annually.

Oh no. Whatever will we do without a third waterpark.

I get that it's also a test facility, but they probably have the space to do it at Mont Cascades.

I see there is a lake in the plan. It would be cool to have some of the slides suspended over the lake or terminate in the lake.

I'd like to see them use the soon-to-be abandoned Canadian Tire Centre for a massive indoor water park, hotel and leisure centre (maybe even with an indoor skiing!). To be open 12 months a year would totally set them apart from Calypso and offer a nearby option for those rainy summer days or days when you just don't want to drive to Limoges and would avoid saturating the market.

Honestly, this building could be empty right around the time ProSlide is read to build. Someone message Rick Hunter and ask him to give Eugene Melnyk a call!

Hit Calypso today for the first time. What a perfectly perfect day. We were only adults, left the kids in daycare and all. Heard horror stories about the lineups and such, but we figured that if the Tuesday after a long weekend would be a good bet. And with the forecast, it was even better. Managed to do over 30 slides like these models - https://giftedkiddie.com/best-inflatable-water-slide-park/ . Some of them are awesome! The Boomerang was my favourite. Great food and drink too, lots of room and a ton of staff to help you out. Highly recommended.

Calypso should be keeping a better eye on what their online "marketing" partners are up to. Spamming isn't a good look.

The best part of that post was that they went back and edited the post five days later to update some bullshit link, and still left the word 'today' in it.

Georgia loves our waterparks.

Calypso Waterpark abandons plans to open this summer
The company says it will seek compensation from the government for lost revenue

Sarah Kester · CBC News
Posted: Aug 05, 2020 8:01 PM ET | Last Updated: 12 hours ago

Calypso Waterpark will not be opening for the 2020 season.

The company announced its decision online saying "despite our comprehensive efforts" the Ontario government's decision to keep waterparks closed forced its hand.

In a statement to CBC News, Calypso Waterpark said they had expected to open under the government's Stage 3 plan in mid July and had therefore "invested hundreds of thousands to prepare the park."

"Even with a comprehensive reopening plan that was pre-approved early July by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, the provincial government has put a hold on the waterpark industry in Ontario," the statement said.

Tourism Minister Lisa McLeod said Wednesday she knows parks like Calypso are confident about their safety protocols but the province is continuing to follow guidance from health officials.

"The Chief Medical Officer of Health has advised our government and we have accepted his science that theme parks and waterparks will not be able to open at this time," she said.

With not all of Ontario being in Stage 3 and the fact that people are travelling around the province and into Ontario from different parts of Canada, Dr. David Williams feels reopening parks is too risky at the moment, McLeod said.

Once all of Ontario is in Stage 3, she said the province will reassess whether theme parks and waterparks can reopen but Calypso said that will come too late as their season usually wraps up around Labour Day.

Marie-Eve Doyon, a spokesperson for the company, said they will be seeking compensation from the government.

No surprise there. The Ontario Government has some strange rules around Covid, sort of like a 50 person limit at all gyms and cinemas, regardless of the size. Amusement and Water Parks are outside. It's the safest place. You'd think after a few weeks of observing Quebec, Queen's Park would have seen that these facilities are safer than say, BARS.
