A homeless camp in a first world country should never be allowed to become that dangerous.
It becomes extremely dangerous when the country is still treating drug-use and addiction as health issues rather than a criminal one. Mild drugs do not make addicts violent, but I have a strong feeling that the toxin-laden fentanyl of today is turning some addicts into drug-crazed violent people, as can be seen more and more lately. Therefore authorities need to deal with this with a different angle now. Yet they are arresting criminals and then releasing them back into the streets, including those caught red-handed running drug labs downtown. Overdosed addicts are treated at the expense of tax payers and then released back into the streets as well. If hardcore addicts are not treated long-term in a rehab centre to rid themselves of addiction, there will always be a ready market for the criminals, and the violence that ensues.

Oh I'm quite aware. Whenever I'm doing work in the city (like this weekend!) my car is parked at the North end of Victoria Drive and I don't even trust the trunk blanket anymore because of how many times I've seen lookie-loo's on the camera. Everything comes out when it's parked, including the stereo faceplate. I don't want to be buying replacement windows for a 40 year old car.

Honestly speaking I wouldn't be surprised if this was the only case of violence in the Strathcona favela that makes the mainstream media news. In fact media coverage of the introduction of this favela into a neighbourhood full of working families will be a circus to say the least starring a mental gymnastics performance by apologists.

The Vancouver media has a tendency to put out a story critical of the city's actions in order to virtue signal to Canada (and the World) that they need to do better; and then magically the issue gets ignored even though there are further developments from those deeper issues. A specific example was recently with English Bay being full of beach-goers during the pandemic. There was barely any coverage in the mainstream media yet there is a plethora of examples of people not social distancing in other beaches like Second Beach or Kits Beach. Not that I'm trying to ruin anyone's enjoyment of the awesome summer weather but the media coverage on the lack of social distancing in Vancouver from Canada and local mainstream media outlets undermines the supposed "severity" of the pandemic. And yet the government is praising us for our efforts ? Something's rotten in the state of Denmark...

It wouldn't surprise me at all if by next week there isn't anymore coverage in the mainstream media about the Strathcona favela; and that the mainstream media focuses on something else sensational to distract from the issue.

- We don't see articles on the mental effects that a 10 year old has to go through when they don't feel safe in their own neighbourhoods.

- We don't see articles on the detrimental effects that calling emergency services has on a child (or ANYONE) for someone who has overdosed.

- We don't see mainstream media coverage on families explaining how they have to change their lifestyles to ensure their own safety and the security of their property.

Vancouver has way too many professional poverty pimps for it ever to change. Look at the way they jumped all over Horgan when he said drug use was choice. Of course it is a choice! To say it isn't is to insult the thousands who live with mental health issues yet go to work every day and live their lives without shooting up and marinating in their own feces.

They are health issues. Addiction is not criminal. And fentanyl is a downer. It makes you sleep. The violent addicts are the ones on uppers, things like crack-cocaine and meth.

Anyway, it's looking like Strathcona might be the straw that breaks the camel's back here.

What residents of the camp want, she said, is permanent, stable housing and not to live in parks.

Government officials should be looking for spaces to create that housing, she said.
It's a fair demand to ask for permanent stable housing, but it has to be spread out. There is such a large population of homeless and addicts in the DT area and surrounding neighbourhoods, that it is affecting the livability for residents, and if we keep building housing for these campers in Vancouver, more will come, knowing that this is a way to get housing.

And by spread out, I mean province wide and Canada wide, so these people can live where they came from. In the mean time, find a designated area for them to do their daily activities and camping away from the general public.

The suburbs definitely need to step up and take their fair share. In addition First Nations outside the Lower Mainland should bear some responsibility for taking care of their band members. If that means more government money to provide the infrastructure, so be it. We've seen over the last few months that money can be made available for public health threats, this is definitely that.

Finally the Left needs to accept that some people will never be able to lead lives out in the community and the Right will have to accept that governments need to provide for their institutional care.

From the American Addiction Centers:
https://americanaddictioncenters.org/fentanyl-treatment/signs-of-abuse

Quote:
What Is Fentanyl?
Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate that is at least 50-100 times stronger than morphine, is highly addictive. A person who uses or abuses fentanyl, or who is in withdrawal from the drug, will show various signs and symptoms, which may include:
* A rapid heartbeat
* Pounding in the ears
* Chest tightness
* Mood changes
* Poor balance or coordination
* Hallucinations
* Abnormal thoughts
* Opening a fentanyl patch to eat its gel beads
* Buying fentanyl illegally from people who may have a lawful prescription
* Showing fear at the prospect of not having access to fentanyl
I think some of these symptoms can lead to violence towards others.

Most of the temporary modular housing has been built in the City of Vancouver. There were 128 fewer homeless counted in Vancouver in 2020 compared to 2019. The Buchan, Howard Johnson and American hotel purchases were after the homeless count, which was in March, so of course they had no impact on the numbers.

Not good:

Kids involved in ‘scary incidents’ near Vancouver homeless camp, councillor says
By Amy Judd Global News
Posted August 5, 2020

The number of tents at Vancouver’s Strathcona Park has reached nearly 350, and residents are growing more and more concerned following what one city councillor calls “a number of scary incidents involving children.”

Coun. Pete Fry, who also lives in the area, recounted three incidents he heard from neighbours to CKNW’s Lynda Steele in an interview on Tuesday.

“A man threatened to gouge a kid’s eyes out for looking at him,” Fry said.

“Another child was in the water park and a gentleman was in some stage of psychosis and he walked over, picked the child up and lifted him over his head, shook him and then put him down and proceeded to get into a fight with a jet of water.

“And then another man threatened a newborn. [He] threatened to rape and kill it with a stick.”...

Why would you even allow your kids in that park anymore?

Yeah, these people don’t need forced rehab or hospitalization, the obviously can take care of themselves...

This is a monster that both the right and left have created and someone needs to put their foot down on this nonsense.

That’s the whole joke of the “parks / public space is for everyone” line that activists often use defended homeless camps such as this, but then the parks only become for the homeless and can’t be enjoyed by anyone else...

ENFORCE THE FUCKING 7AM RULE and being back some sanity to this issue.

They aren't. It's the whole neighborhood now. Those incidents are in the rest of the neighborhood.
