Embrace it. Ottawa is going to be Eastern Ontario's version of Mississauga. No taste. No planning. Just a forest of ugly condos amidst massive sprawl.

My apartment in Toronto was really close to One Bloor. Honestly, it's nice but after a couple looks you really stop paying attention to the exterior and just notice the scale.

Sorry to break it to you, but Mississauga is definitely ahead of Ottawa in terms of high-rise architecture.

I agree that this will be the case along the suburban light rail stations, but I think there is still a chance we will see some great density with community building where it really matters. Lebreton, Zibi, Little Italy, Tunney's et. al.

If they had used perforated stainless steel panels (which can easily be curved) on those balconies, the Icon could have been something else. The transparent glass is just too weak visually (and cheap looking) to make the detail visible from a distance

In an idealized situation we probably have a density-ish downtown stretching from Byward/CBD to Lebreton/Zibi and then south to Little Italy ending at Dow's Lake. Bonus points if we figure out Westboro/Tunney's.

That's more exception than the rule. And while those buildings are nice, their integration at street level sucks.

I find the street level of Absolute World pretty decent. Better than a lot of Ottawa projects:

Mississauga has a couple of nice towers but it doesn't have anything near to the density of Ottawa's CBD, or the historic buildings. Sauga is improving but it still has a long way to go from being a giant mall surrounded by towers.

Most of the buildings in downtown Mississauga are well integrated at street level, especially the buildings west of Square One. Patios, burger joints, Starbucks, dental offices. I hopped out of my car to grab something from Starbucks last year and went for a quick walk around the area. It's starting to feel like a proper downtown.
