Why was it not torn down after the fire?
Why does the City not force the demo or do it themselves and add cost to realty bill? It’s a another fire death trap waiting to happen..

apears to of been pulled add was someone posting about perfect opertunity for a 7k a month rooming house was a mess dunno how the city alows houses to get run down like it was

How protected is the BMO at Portage & Main currently? The MMF is having a competition to design the interior and exterior of the Metis Heritage Centre.

I think this centre is a fantastic idea, but this scares me a bit.

I presume, assume, hope, it would be on the most basic level of removing anything modern. Such as the BMO cubicles, and installing new gallery displays. Without altering any of the old, historical elements.

It does say respectfully in the website. So we'll see. Exterior, again maybe adding some type of signage.

It’d be cool to see some massive beadwork banners hanging between the front columns, like you see on buildings like this in NYC, Europe, etc. I hope they leave the engraved BMO signage on the building and just add some tasteful signage to the outside. Maybe a freestanding sign like U of W’s or WAG’s at the front somewhere instead of a installing one on the building.

Less is more. Exterior alterations only need to hint at what's inside. It doesn't need to be garish.

There could be interesting exterior design elements that speak to the building's purpose without losing the amazing McKim exterior.

For instance, look at the entrance canopy at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park above (source). The visual language is distinctively and unmistakably Indigenous, but it's not heavyhanded.

My biggest concern is that they won't have the budget to execute and we'll end up with something like the awful swoopy thing Prairie Architects did for APTN (apologies to those who like it).

I worry about what they'll do with the columns. I could imagine someone proposing something visually similar to what Ai Weiwei did at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (which is amazing), but then them running out of money and doing it with some sort of vinyl wrap that fades or tears.

I'd be very happy with a vinyl wrap that fades and tears. Its permanent demolition of facade elements that I am very afraid of.

What makes you really afraid of this?

This might be naive, but why would they purchase such an incredibly high-profile heritage building -- arguably among the most important architectural landmarks in Winnipeg -- if they wanted to demolish the facade elements?

If they just wanted to make something look the way they wanted, could they not have purchased any number of other downtown buildings (or even parking lots) to remodel or build in the way they saw fit?

Do you have any knowledge of the players involved here?

It just seems odd to have a competition if you’re only thinking of adding some banners or simple signage.

I've been avoiding commenting because this is such a dangerous topic these days. However I think Vikings fears are justified... Remember, there are different rules for different people.

Sure there are lots of other locations they could have chosen, but this is Portage and Main. Its a very symbolic location and the heart of Winnipeg.

Back in the 90s there was a realistic risk that we could end up with murals of Riel painted on the side by high school students, etc., but I think there is a little more sophistication these days. I have faith that the parties involved will respect the building.

Still annoying as hell that BMO is leaving that landmark location, though.

Depending on how cynical you want to be, it's both a way to engage with the community and show that they're open to feedback, and a way to get design ideas for free.

Costco looks like they changed their mind from McPhillips and Murray, they're getting budget prices for West St Paul location behind Windsor Plywood on Main and the perimeter. Expected start May 2021 (advertised on WCA).... hopefully that brings a ton of new businesses/restaurants with it and gives us a new commercial centre in this part of town.
