i thought the numbers were curious too. So I went back to the zoning documents, and this is how the building breaks down.

office: 43,000 sf
warehouse: 780,522 sf
robotics mezzanine: 3,018,345

There were different parking requirements for the mezzanine levels. The multi level warehouse is looking like a new trend. There was a WSJ article last year where Amazon leased a 3 story warehouse in Seattle. These warehouses are trying to reduce the delivery time.

There was identical new Amazon warehouse announced for Little Rock. Here is a link to a 2.5 million sf warehouse in Colorado, complete with photos.

Nice digging. "Robotics Mezzanine" can really only be the place they store these:

Yea we laugh about it now but five generations from now that may become reality. As AI gets smarter and robotics become more commonplace, there will be less and less need for human labor. Once they develop an AI framework that is capable of programming itself, not only will blue collar jobs be gone, but so will white collar jobs, i.e. accountants, software developers, doctors, etc. All that will be left are the one percenters and their offspring. With no way of making a living, the others either succumb to the principles of Darwinism or have to pull double 8-hour shifts as a bio-battery to make a living wage. Either way, the world may soon reach peak population and will eventually dwindle back down to the 1%ers as technology advances. Good news is that celebrity entertainers, psychiatrists and divorce attorneys will likely still be in abundance.

Tesla confirms they selected their next US gigafactory site. Doesn't say where, but hopefully will tell everyone during the earnings call this afternoon.

Per their investor letter: "Next US Gigafactory site selected; preparations underway"

4:30. Elon just confirmed it's Austin. Said work at the site has already begun as of last weekend apparently.

edit - here's an article:

Tesla will build Cybertruck factory in Austin, Texas
‘It’s going to basically be an ecological paradise,’ Elon Musk says

That makes sense. Under the existing mining permit they can begun remediation at any time without needing to get a permit. The property will need a lot of patching up.

Well...I guess congrats are in order. Now if someone could please help me understand what he meant by "Ecological Paradise" please. I don't understand how that superlative matches the occasion or the future of that site. One thing to note, no matter where Elon is, (he said it was ok if I refer to him by his first name) he will only be a few minutes from his private jet to the gigafactory as will any of his dignitaries he invites. Far closer than any of the rumored sites along Hwy 79. I also would like to mention that those "trucks" he will be building there don't actually look like trucks to me. If you end up getting one, you still may have to rent a real truck to get those washers and dryers home.

The starting pay will apparently be $35,000, including benefits.

That is insultingly low.

Well, this is not quite the rumor I heard in Jan. Same company, but it was told to me as a much bigger deal.

All I heard was it was Tesla and way more jobs than the new Apple building. I falsely assumed it was an HQ type situation.

I’m pumped and I welcome Tesla. Now let’s move the HQ to Austin.

They certainly have the room to build a HQ out there in addition to the factory.

From the Austin American Statesman

Quote:
“The location is five minutes from (Austin-Bergstrom International Airport) and 15 minutes from downtown Austin,” Musk said, speaking on a conference call with Wall Street analysts following the company’s second-quarter earnings release.

“We are going to make it a factory that is going to be stunning,” he said. “It is right on the Colorado River. So we are actually going to have a boardwalk where there will be a hike and biking trail. It is basically going to be an ecological paradise — birds in the trees, butterflies, fish in the stream. And it will be open to the public as well, so not closed and only open to Tesla.”

The way that he is wanting to build it as a "paradise" indicates to me that it could be much more than just a factory in the future, possibly HQ as well. IMO.

Is it?? These are jobs for high school grads with no college degree. Considering the average salary for a recent college grad is $50k, I personally think $35k for a high a school diploma is fair. From a pute numbers standpoint, a college grad would have spent about $20k/year in expenses and tuition, about $80k after 4 years. So for a high school grad not to have to put up the time and money for college, I think $35k is fair.

Also in addition to a salary, they also get benefits and stock options. That's much better than the opportunities available to them now working in, say, the retail or hospitality industry in Austin.

Yes, agreed. Whatever he’s describing, it’s not just a factory to make cars and trucks.
