Took a quick drive today during lunch to check out a few things:
1.) WTC is still not under construction, despite months (if not years) of press releases making it sound like they are imminently or are under construction.
2.) Didn't see any evidence of imminent construction at Shelby's.
3.) The area up by Downing/38th looks sooooo different compared to a few years ago. If WTC does go up, and T3 can get going, the area will ultimately be completely unrecognizable eventually.

I happen to notice after today's Nasdaq rally that Twillio was up a nice 10% which rang a quiet bell in me brain. Yup, they opened a "Sendgrid" office in downtown Denver. Outside of their 3 Cali offices they also have office locations in Denver, Atlanta and New York . Their stock has gone from $100/share at the beginning of the year to now $263/share.

Denver officials OK pricey repairs and a facelift for wrinkly 16th Street Mall despite outcry over other priorities

A makeover of the 16th Street Mall took a major step forward Monday when the Denver City Council approved an agreement that funnels earmarked tax dollars into the project.

The council voted to advance the project by a vote of 11 to 1, with Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca dissenting. Councilwoman Debbie Ortega was absent.

Also, an opportunity for infrastructure improvements.

Bus shuttles will take over the middle of the street under which a water line from the 1800s will be replaced.

Councilman Kevin Flynn represents the city on the Denver Regional Council of Governments, which doles out federal funding to cities and counties. Flynn said Denver wrested $20 million for the mall from suburban officials “after substantial struggle and conflict.”

“If this project were to be lost by voting no on the DURA amendment tonight, it would be more than another decade before the funding sources could be assembled again, if at all, while the mall would continue to deteriorate past its 50th year of service,” Flynn said in a statement.

Conor McCormick-Cavanagh of Westword fame has a nice piece of the final four names to replace "Stapleton".

Note: this is the 2nd piece by Conor I've read recently; guy knows how to write. Checking his bio, he "previously worked as a journalist in Tunisia "
Props to his nascent career.

Mosley is growing on me. Either Skyview or Concourse would make a good choice but it appears to be a horse race between Central Park and Mosely.

Yep. It’s the safe, cowardly, name that is narrowly defined and relevant only to the south side ilk (Northfield forever!). Mosley would have been the inspiring choice while Skyview is god awful (but at least it’s not Skyfield).

Skyview is probably too similar to Skyland an existing NE Denver neighborhood.

Skyfield was the perfect name that was the result of exhaustive research where a dude talked to fifteen (!) people in the neighborhood to gauge their feelings. But the tyrannical SUN board has quashed the democratic wishes of the people and imposed their own names due to their hidden agenda.

At least that’s what FB is telling me.

I actually kinda like "Skyview".... but I guess I am in the minority. It has a bit of a relaxing hook to it that could give the neighborhood a fun theme.

Seeing as the fence was only around the building and not the entire lot, it might be a little longer. Usually, they give monthly parking patrons a month's notice before they fence off the entire lot.

Yea that’s a good point. There a lot of construction stuff on the lot now and not a lot cars but that could just be demo specific. Hopefully it means they are moving along and committed to starting construction and not just expanding the lot for a while

Great news about Shelby's. I'm moving to the suburbs (for ease of pandemic/WFH life) and will miss watching all the construction. But at least I'm getting tf out of Candiland.

I mean, the University of Colorado A Line doesn't go anywhere near the University of Colorado. So it is only fitting that we have a Central Park neighborhood that is central to nothing. That won't be confusing at all.

Also, obviously the residents of Stapleton were never going to rename the place after a black man whose name might actually stick. They are voting for a name that nobody will ever use so that practically, ten years from now, everybody still calls it Stapleton. That is the obvious goal.

I also noticed that each time someone resurrects the project, it shrinks a little bit more in height. Who knows, at this rate, someone will propose a 3-story low-rise on the site sometime towards the end of this century, and then maybe that will finally get built and break the 2 Tabor curse.

Even more excellent news - though I don't know which one is better, that 16th St. is getting the much-needed spruce up, or the fact that Candi lost.

I hope they do keep the iconic rattlesnake pattern though. I know it looks faded and dated now, but I imagine it must have looked a whole lot better when it was still brand new back in the 80s.

Me, personally, I would have suggested the name "McClane" - which would refer both to Elijah McClane and satisfy the social justice angle of the name change (especially as Aurora is right next door), and also to John McClane, in honor of the neighborhood's most famous contribution to pop culture when they filmed Die Hard 2 there. But then again, I guess city-planners don't like the idea of potentially having to pay royalties to a Hollywood studio for the naming rights.
