I'm wondering if there is something in the law where if a private property owner (or their agent, like a security guard) asks or tells a photographer to stop then there might be an obligation to stop or else it could be seen as being intrusive and harassing.

I would've waited for the cops to come and arrest the security guards who acted like crybaby Karens. Since when can't we take pictures of buildings? Those guards are just abusing their power and they need to be taught a lesson. For a town with so much disorderliness and lawlessness, taking pictures of buildings should be the last thing we need to be worried about. This city is just getting from bad to much much worse.

The only time I was told not to take photos of a building was at the entrance of MI6 headquarters in London. That I do understand, but I walked over to a nearby pedestrian overhead bridge and snapped some anyway. So, take that, 007!

No mcminsen, there is no such law. They had absolutely no legal standing to ask you to do anything. The only time private security can ask anything of you in the public realm is if they have a permit from the city to supervise some kind of event with a permit to use public property for that event. And even then their ability to enforce their rules is extremely limited. It would be like a shoplifter being apprehended by store security. They can apprehend and detain but must then involve the police, who are the only ones who can effect a charge. In your case, you were under no obligation to stop or move. If they are concerned about intrusion or harassment, they need to put up a barrier to block the view. Any private property (save for 'peeping' behaviour) that can be seen from public property is open to view, photography, and filming. Next time, tell them to call the police, and ignore them.

Totally within your right to take exterior photos of any building anywhere as long as you're on public property. I'm sure you didn't want to waste your time on those power-tripping, knuckle-draggers, but if that happens again, tell them to call the police. Hell, call the police yourself, and say that you're being harassed.

What a prick. Dare him to call the cops next time. They'll explain the law to him in front of you. Have a friend record it and we'll have a viral video.

I understand not wanting to make a scene though, thanks for your pics as always.

Who is developing this? I would send them an email telling them you don't appreciate being threatened by their security while on public property. They were way out of line.

I've had it happen once, in Montreal, on the sidewalk outside a project I was working on. I too walked away, to avoid escalating with an unpredictable (though mistaken) aggressor.

I'd LOVE to take part in the Great Snapshot Sit-In!

Technically I think the rules are a lot more strict in Montreal about public photography whether or not you are on public property.

You are free to talk pictures from public property. As long as you were on a city sidewalk you're in the clear. Make sure you're on the city sidewalk though as it can be easy to confuse the property line.

Having worked with and within surveillance in my time, I know that businesses and building owners most often have directives with their security teams to deter photography of the premises in case something deviant or of a criminal nature could be in planning. Yes, you (McMinsen) are no different than anyone else that could be photographing their building in their eyes. You would be what is called or referred to as a JDLR (just doesn't look right) and the security should professionally approach you and maybe inquire as to the reason you are shooting pictures first rather than how these ones did it. They are probably new at their job. Don't take it personal. But I agree, many more of us should just do the same and take a few innocent shots. It will help in their security's development......ha ha ha
