Megan Gillis, Ottawa Citizen
Publishing date: Jul 02, 2020 • Last Updated 6 hours ago • 1 minute read

Expect significant snarls starting Thursday night Highway 417 closes in both directions between Carling Avenue and Bronson Avenue until Monday morning for the replacement of the bridges over the CPR and O-Train Trillium Line tracks.

Lane reductions and ramp closures are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will take full effect by 8 p.m. and last until 6 a.m. Monday.

The ramp from Rochester Street to Highway 417 westbound closed Tuesday with closures starting Thursday including:
  • O’Connor Street westbound
  • Lyon Street westbound
  • Bronson Avenue westbound
  • Rochester Street westbound
  • Parkdale Avenue westbound
  • Carling/Kirkwood avenues eastbound
  • Parkdale Avenue eastbound

Orangeville Street will also be closed between Rochester Street and Booth Street during the project.

Westbound traffic must exit the highway at Bronson Avenue and follow a signed detour:
  • Continue westbound on Catherine Street
  • Continue onto Raymond Street
  • Turn left on Booth Street
  • Turn right on Carling Avenue
  • Take Highway 417 westbound on-ramp from Carling Avenue

Eastbound motorists must exit the highway at Carling andKirkwood avenues and follow the detour:
  • Continue eastbound on Carling Avenue
  • Turn left on Bronson Avenue
  • Turn right on Chamberlain Avenue
  • Continue onto Isabella Street
  • Take Highway 417 eastbound on-ramp at Metcalfe Street

Will they be leaving an underpass for pedestrians/cyclists at Champagne?

I don't think anything is happening at Champagne, but the new overpass was designed with enough space to accommodate a second MUP on the west side of the tracks, whenever the city decides to build it (aligned next to Railway St, not Champagne Ave). The MUP on the east side, part of the "Trillium Pathway," will be rebuilt after the overpass is done. The cross-section of the overpass can be found on page 31 (Page 21 in the document) of the Design and Construction report here.

Hope that answers your question!

Thanks for that! I guess I miss-read the web-cam image, thinking that the missing chunk of the Queensway was aligned with Champagne, but it's actually above the tracks.

They are starting to move the new overpass into place. How are they actually moving it?

I remember taking a visitor along Scott Street into downtown and found the route really disappointing as far as streetscape. Part of it is obviously the Lebreton wasteland, but it was actually more than that. It was basically a traffic sewer that lacked anything attractive even at points west of Lebreton. It is too bad the city chose to demolish the Wellington Street viaduct all those years ago and not replace it. At least Wellington/Richmond Road were true urban streets with a sense of history along the corridor. Scott Street has none of it. It is simply blah.

The bridge structures are actually being moved using the same method that was used for the Vimy Ridge Memorial Bridge. Yes, the MTO told the media that THEY had not used this method in Eastern Ontario before, but it has been used in Ottawa by others.

Recall that the ‘Vimy Bridge’ was built east of the river and then pushed into position along tracks that spanned the river. The bridge structure was then lowered onto the bearing surfaces and the tracks removed. Obviously, the structure is elevated on short jacks above the tracks while it is being moved so that it will clear any obstacles until it is in position.

That is exactly what is happening at the CPR/O-Train Bridge Replacement. The bridge structures are sitting up on short vertical jacks on top of rails. Large horizontal jacks are used to slowly push the first structure into position, and then the structure is lowered, using the short jacks, onto the bearing surfaces. Then the second structure follows suite. Once both structures are sitting on their bearings, the short jacks can be completely removed, followed by the removal of the tracks.

Good Day.

You can see the west-side track and it's supports on the middle of the 3 escarpments, below the lip where the bulldozers are spreading the aggregate. There is a monitor crew in the ledge watching and clearing the track.

It seems they are moving both spans into place at the same time; the north span is a few feet behind the south span, in motion. No reason why not, if the tracks are well secured and firm, and it saves time.

Looking Good !

Did you just jinx it?

Anyone else notice that the south structure seems to have been stopped for the last hour? The north structure has caught up to it. And there are a lot of people staring down at the tracks in front of the structures.

Maybe they are just repositioning the 'pushing jacks', but I don't know.

Interesting to watch, though.

And who calculate how much granular fill would be needed? I see that they are now starting to truck it away.

Once when I was helping someone with a deck, I made a mistake on how much gravel we would need. (Don’t do design late at night, when you are very tired!) I divided by 9 instead of 27 for the number of cubic feet of fill.

Result; three times more gravel than we actually needed.

Solution; we doubled the size of the deck (which was great!) and added a good, deep, proper bed under his shed. It was a lot more work, but we found ways to use it all up

I wondered what they were going to do with all that material as it was being delivered to the 417. Now I know. They are trucking away a large portion of it. Your tax-dollars at work.

Good Day.

ToBeSelfAccusatory......of course I jinxed it ! I have a Talent !

ToBeHonest..... stops are not uncommon, as they check their clearances and alignments and verify west side .vs. east side progress.
They have done this in the past with standard rapid replacement systems, wherein the deck will sit for awhile as they check themselves.
We can see that the south deck is at just before entering the south deck run, where there are probably differences in clearances between north .vs.south deck piers.
Or they indeed had a problem and are checking/fixing it - also not unexpected.

As for the fill..... I -think- I saw that they had used up a lot of the debris/detritus from the previous approach pads in filling up the new approach pads - well chopped up and crushed.
They have then now been covering that over with fresh aggregate fill. But I am not certain of this. It saves on costs of junk removal .vs. returning good aggregate bought on spec JIC.
They seemed to be removing only the large chunks and rebar impregnated junk over to the spoils pile on the southwest aside area.
I have not been watching full time in order to be sure of this opinion. FWIW.

Still Interesting !
