As there doesn't seem to be general area for chit chat, I'll ask here: I see so many district names that I just can't place in any language. Where do these names come from? Edmonton's really unique in this regard with names like Meyokumin, Keheewin, and Orleskiw. What's the source of these names and what language do some of them derive from? Is there a naming convention for Edmonton neighborhoods that is guided by some unique parameters?

the city has a committee and a process in place to address the naming of facilities, neighborhoods, and parks etc.

meyokumin is cree for good water, keheewin is cree for eagle and orleskiw is named after joseph orleskiw, a ukrainian immigrant and agronomist who promoted immigration to canada.

it only takes the same amount of practice and exposure as any other place name.

saskatchewan isn't one to roll easily of the tongue the first time and neither is tatamagouche or whycocomagh, n.s.

none of which hold a candle to poland's wytrzyszczka or to wales' llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Shameless plug. We had our 'beer opening' to kick off the construction of the old Substation site on 124 Street. We have lined up some great tenants so far: Irrational Brewing, Grizzlar Coffee and Lux Mrkt a high-end mens clothing consignment retailer. We're very excited about this one.
