She claims that certain people have the right and feel empowered to speak freely while other people (read = indigenous) can't. I'd disagree that evidence on the ground in public or in the media these days suggests in any way that indigenous people cannot speak their minds freely and are fearful of doing so.

She makes interpretations and passes judgement on the intentions of the person who came to her home (seemingly) out of good faith, presumably because of that person's "race".

The comparison to the Colten Boushie case is totally absurd.

Not every job is conducive to playing the activist's role. Employment behind the microphone of a public broadcaster that is supposed to represent the wide range of opinions out there is not a place where you are free to share any opinion you want and especially not have your opinions dominate the entire space. There are media outlets where you can do that, but the CBC is not or at least should not be one of them.
You did much better than me. I struggled to understand what she was trying to say but couldn't work my way out of all the verbiage. Still not sure what the issue was supposed to be.

Some NLers aren't handling change well, and the progressives are nearing the end of their rope.

The studies showing no racial bias in police use of force in the US are easy to find:

https://www.nber.org/papers/w22399
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1948550618775108

I'm totally in agreement that US police use too much force. Americans have had a shite-load of guns since the 1950s, but police militarization and brutality against US citizens have really only ramped up in the last two decades, concurrent with drops in crime rates.

I don't know the explanation for this.

Flippant responses, denial, and ignorance while common coping mechanisms will never resolve these issues. The mob you perceive may get angrier and louder, making even less sense to you. That is because you chose not to listen.

There is a part of me that reacted the way Rousseau does, but I chose not to prioritize my discomfort. I listened even when I heard things I didn't want to hear. I was curious. The truth of those ideas stuck to me and I could not shake them. I struggled against it but in the end my opinion evolved and is still evolving.
You sound like a religious convert. This white guilt stuff is becoming very cult-like.

White Fragility is like Mao's Little Red Book of our times.

BLM is your new religion.

Repent now, sinner.

I keep going on this. Why? The SJW mantra is that we can't move forward without repenting of the original sin of whiteness. I disagree, and feel it's plainly obvious that we only move forward by acknowledging our common humanity. That was the modus operandi in the 1960s. Seems it got lost somehow.
"acknowledging our common humanity"?????

That sounds awfully close to... All Lives Matter.

Engage with the statistics and arguments rather than attacking the person.

If it makes you feel better, I've lived most of my adult life in the US as a person of color with darker skin than most African Americans and I think he makes an excellent point.

So now maybe you can allow yourself to actually engage with his argument? Because for you, it's not the substance of the argument but the person who makes it.

It's quite liberating being a racist and a Trump supporter. You can say anything!

Years ago I had a black girlfriend. We never talked about race at all, only music and movies. Her two roommates were gay. One of them hit on me at a bar before he knew we were going out, and cursed his bad luck when she told him. I was flattered. We eventually drifted apart because I wasn't comfortable with her karaoke choices.

True story. La-dee-dah and kumbaya!

The Irish slave posts I saw were proven to be aboot Italian miners in Belgium. White slavery existed, the Romans used their enemy prisoners, etc. as slaves, humans were a major natural resource. I think of slavery as a separate thing from racism, the one is not dependent upon the other. I'm also beginning to feel that "racist" is a new "R" word that should not be used, if it is used as an insult rather than a descriptor.

The bulk of the elites never really change for the most part, even through revolutions and upheavals like in the late Roman Empire or China under Mao. The Son Also Rises by Gregory Clark is a great book that examines this.

I agree that the slavery discussion is mostly distracting when the focus is on present-day issues like police brutality. Part of why it comes up is the reparations debate in the United States.

Indentured servitude existed well into the 19th century in Canada and lasted much longer all around the world (I'd guess it's still common in lots of countries). Just as you can find old newspaper ads for escaped black slaves, you will find newspaper ads placed by the masters of white girls who might have only been 15 or 16 and agreed to indentured servitude because they were starving. There was also debtors' prison in the 19th century, and children were sometimes forced to work to pay off debts of parents.

A black girlfriend and you knew gay people? Omg.

Irrefutable proof.

It’s the classic “but I have black friends so I can’t be racist” argument that anyone with even a moderate understanding of race knows is a smokescreen for denial these days.

Not talking about race with someone also does not mean you’re not racist.

But then again, all of these concepts are above your head. Good luck with the future.

I think gay people should also be paid reparations, for years, even centuries, of systemic abuse.

It's very likely that some of my ancestors, the first to come across to NA in the 1700s, were indentured servants, but I don't think it is common in Canada. Should I get reparations too?

Complete destruction? No.
Restructuring of the cultural habits that western society is based upon? Yes.

Between references to Nazis and Jordan Peterson videos i'm pretty safe in saying that this thread has jumped the shark in its relevancy.

He won't. In June 2016 he was six points down on Clinton with 20% undecided. He's currently nine points down on Biden with 8% undecided. Biden is potentially trending towards the largest Democratic win in 60 years. Of course, that's to assume there won't be massive voter suppression and voter fraud in November, which there almost certainly will be.
I think there are many misleading ideas in the arguments being used. I think the repercussions of present movements serve to obfuscate and deflect from many other underlying discrepancies in our society. The real disparities are class based rather than race based. On the other hand, if western society is somehow destroyed, it can also mean the ruination of the one percent. So, it is in the interest of everyone to find workable productive solutions that will produce real results and not just idealistic feel-good results.

For what its worth, I like Mayor Tory's proposed response to current protests. Seems generally reasonable and appropriate.

This article is good at explaining police bias in the US:

>Based on information from more than two million 911 calls in two US cities, he concluded that white officers dispatched to Black neighbourhoods fired their guns five times as often as Black officers dispatched for similar calls to the same neighbourhoods4 (see ‘Answering the call’). Hoekstra wonders whether the factors that contribute to an officer using excessive force might be predicted in a similar way to how US Major League Baseball teams use sophisticated statistical models to predict whether a player has the potential to be a future all-star.

Hilarious because you left out this little gem.

You're citing stats from 2 cities.

That 2 million 911 calls sound really "official" but if this is Omaha it means absolutely nothing.

This racialism is a cult, "systemic" is turning into some bizarre form of original sin.

We must repent repent to the racial order of the universe if not we'll be living in "systemic" racism.

The reality is systemic is the word to use when you have no actual evidence of racism but want to attribute small statistical differences to some cause.

Its a guilt complex value system revolving around people who are upset that evil still exists. They suffer from a deep religious void and are too proud to admit to it. So they turn to people creating that void(liberal arts majors) to fill that void, because people using words like "systemic" have some "scientific" credibility in our society.
