Friendly Advice: if you want your experience in this thread to result in something positive, what you should do is go see your BLM Vancouver buddies and explain to them that you had interactions with a diversified sample of highly educated Canadians of at least upper middle class, you know, the sort of people you typically need on board when you want political change in this country, and that their reaction to your current approach was very unfavorable, and you should probably re-think it.
I am proudly passionate on this topic. Thank you for noticing.

This conversation has definitely reinforced how deeply racially-ignorant many Canadians are. It inspires me to deepen my allyship and work harder for change. Thank you.

Unfortunately the upper case variants of the first two concepts in quotes above have both been co-opted by more extreme elements.

You don't see how the fact that in a short-ish time frame there already were several shootings in the police-free zone proves our point regardless of who shot who and motive?

Google "1969 Montreal Police Strike" and get back to me, I'm curious to see if you'll still think it's a good idea after you learn it's been tried even in the Land of No Second Amendment.
Where did I say it was a good idea?

"Between white people"? We're venturing into the parallel universe once again. Like the one where segregation is now (indirectly, for the moment) supported by the left and minorities.

Please tell me you're not suggesting white people come up with solutions for issues faced by minorities, without said minorities being involved?

If you agree with me that this flagship demand of BLM Vancouver is an incredibly stupid idea, then surely it follows that you share my opinion that these people are nutcases...?

(I'm sorry if I drew the wrong conclusions from your constant opposition to basically everything I've ever posted in this thread. )

The skin colour of this political columnist is black, therefore his opinion is right. That's how this works, right?

Quote:
No, Police Racism Isn’t an Epidemic
So far, we haven’t seen a shred of evidence that George Floyd’s death in police custody last month was racially motivated. But for those looking to exploit the incident, that doesn’t seem to matter.

The violence in the streets, and the liberal commentary that toggles between justification and cheerleading, is fueled by assumptions that racial discrimination in policing is widespread, that low-income minority communities are overpatrolled, and that black men are targeted for their skin color rather than for their behavior. There’s no denying that there was a time—in the living memory of many Americans—when this was true. The question is how true it remains.

In a 2015 Gallup poll taken after Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, Mo., a majority of black respondents said police treat them fairly, and far more blacks (38%) than whites (18%) said they “want a greater police presence in their local communities.” Another Gallup survey, published last year, asked black and Hispanic residents of low-income neighborhoods about policing and found that these groups “aren’t averse to law enforcement—in fact, they are particularly concerned about crime in their neighborhoods.” Fifty-nine percent of both blacks and Hispanics said that “they would like the police to spend more time in their area than they currently do, making them more likely than white residents (50%) to respond this way.”

Oooof...sometimes the SJW narrative goes so far up its own arse they don't realize how confusing it is when it comes out the other end.

Isn't the white saviour complex something we're supposed to be avoiding? Aren't white folks supposed to shut up?

Does nuance mean nothing to you? Obviously I don't support many of the extreme views of the BLM organization. I can also think that there is systemic racism in Canada.

Media didn't said much about Derek Chauvin's wife being of Asian descent nor the cop who killed Chantel Moore was black. Don't ever trust the media narrative. Reading articles on CBC both cops were blood thirsty white supremacists. Both were murders IMO but you can blatanly see the media manipulation in these stories.

This polling data from 2015 stands out:

Umm...google Kellie Chauvin. Plenty of articles about her.

Are you implying a white guy having an Asian wife be a mitigating factor? In any case you should read this:

Edmundston has black people?

When someone is committed to misunderstanding something, it is what it is. They don’t want to understand, and the world will move forward regardless.

True, but it remains to be seen whether it'll move forward in the more racist, more segregationist direction you and your ilk are trying to push it, or instead in the colorblind post-Canadian-Apartheid direction people like me are rooting for.

From what I've seen in this thread, I'd be surprised if you guys prevail in the long run. Seems clear to me that obsession with race will turn out to be on the wrong side of history sooner or later.

Nope, not at all, just that it doesn't go with the narrative.

I do think some change is likely to come out of this. But it will probably be in a form and on a scale that the majority of the population is comfortable with. That's almost always the way things go.

That plays a role. I grew up in a time when everyone around me was homophobic. It was suffocating. That has fundamentally changed over time, for the most part. Dramatic changes can and do happen. You just might be in the lagging or regressive end of that.

You think that your opinions are more important in a sense because they are supposedly indicative of the majority. But what if that’s not true or what if the majority is already shifting and you will be left behind? Young people will accelerate that further.

Time will tell. You, frankly, sound like a dinosaur to me when it comes to these issues so I’m not really worried. Even if, for example, Trump wins a second term, it just delays or even intensifies the inevitable.
