Let's not kid ourselves, if it were 1988 then most of the people on this forum would be all "yeah, sure apartheid is bad, but those uMkhonto we Sizwe thugs are just going too far".

To what? something generic like "Yummy Ice Cream Sandwich"???

Although I do have sympathy for removing the name Eskimo from common usage since it is not how the Inuit refer to themselves, and has pejorative origins........

In general terms however, we are now in an era of mob rule where things are happening so quickly that all thought and reason are being tossed out the window.........

There's two sides to everything and in the excitement to toss everything down the memory hole once it becomes unpalatable for historical injustice - no matter the context of the times - it eliminates what makes us, you know, us.

I have no use for statues of monsters or symbols of overt oppression.

But...

Historical figures are flawed and products of their times. In certain ways, they were ahead of their time with thinking and it's why we remember them in a positive light.

I'm not going to advocate the tearing down of every John A. Macdonald statue despite the man being an alcoholic, a boor and having regressive views of the Indigenous people of this country. On balance, the man was instrumental in creating a country that - despite its flaws - is one of the better examples of the positive aspects of humanity.

If one wants purity of this sort of thing, go to Singapore. It has almost no signs of its flaws and history. It's Disneyland for technocrats - as close to "purity" as you'll get on planet Earth from a cultural conflict point-of-view. You get unbridled economic prosperity at the cost of huge cultural blandness. Just don't annoy the government or think outside the box and one will be fine.

We had a guest speaker in one of my Indigenous studies classes this year, she was from the arctic but rather than identifying as Inuit (the people) she and others she knew identified as Isikimoo (Eskimo, the people of the ice who eat whale) and said that the derogation of the word Eskimo doesn’t really makes sense to her. She said we were all Inuit, because essentially Inuit means humanity.

She also brought in Seal, Arctic Char, and whale blubber for everyone to try. We ate it cold/frozen and raw, sitting in a huge circle like they do. It was awesome.

That's very interesting Chad. I had heard that Eskimo was a northern Cree name given to the Inuit and meaning "eaters of raw meat", and thus was meant in a mocking manner. What you heard puts an entirely different slant on things.

"People of the ice who eat whale" has an entirely different connotation as far as I am concerned, and actually sounds rather noble.

Inuit are just one grouping of Eskimos, though. The people in Alaska, Greenland and Labrador-Ungava aren't Inuit, as I understand it. I don't know if there is a single term, other than "Eskimo", that designates them collectively.

Arctic Peoples, which has the advantage of encompassing both hemispheres.
