Ohmigod, that just doesn't scrape the bottom of the barrel... I think Diogenes' house would be more aesthetically-pleasing than those buildings, if we could even mention them in the same sentence (which we can't).

There are at least three of them? Perfect clones except for the color?

Truly some of the cheapest, saddest-looking buildings I've ever seen. Why the F would someone build that if you can instead build something that looks decent for not much more (and probably, even the same)?

Edit - I blame people. If everyone was like you and I, no one could get away with building crap like this. But there are people who are willing to buy a house that looks like that...

Time Out published this photo of Montreal's skyline from a very unusual angle. It's a bit old and missing a lot of recent construction, but it's pretty remarkable.

I don't have any photos but Google Street View has images from last year. It's not great. The architectural quality of most projects is atrocious but in recent years there have been some decent ones like YUL. There's also a college there, the ETS, which recently built a transparent glass pavilion that is quite nice.

Griffintown is a holdover from when Montreal was still emerging from economic stagnation and any development was welcome. It's basically going to be the 2010s equivalent of the area around Concordia, which is filled with super ugly 1970s towers but is otherwise quite vibrant and interesting.

The one positive is that the city is steadily improving the streetscapes around Griffintown to widen sidewalks, plant trees and install separated cycle tracks. It will still be an ugly part of town but at least it will be a nice place to walk.

Love the pic of Trinity Bellwoods where the city had to install temporary social distancing circles for the Hipsters.

An astute comparison. I worked in the Concordia Ghetto for a long time, and it is filled with frightfully ugly concrete monstrosities, but is surprisingly quite vibrant (especially now that the disaster that befell Ste. Catherine Ouest after the old forum closed has finally been rehabilitated (the Stretch from the Park to du Fort was a fucking nightmare of abandoned buildings for decades).

Agreed. Spot-on comparison reflecting a deep knowledge of the city.

^If I squint, the mast of the sailboat is looking a lot like a hotel in Dubai.

Perhaps architectural standards have improved but I still find Griffintown looks better than the area around Concordia. Not sure how well it will age, though.

Though I will say that Griffintown feels like "Anytown" possibly more than any other part of inner city Montreal. Which is often the antithesis of "Anytown".

Amazing how big the Metrotown area looks off in the distance. Great picture.

I think you meant YOO. I also like Looney sur ville and Bassin sur Le Havre is not bad. In general, it's Devimco that builds the most ordinary stuff. Sadly, they are everywhere. The boom of the sector is so incredible that at the end it will make for a very urban, vibrant part of the city. There will be lots of new green spaces and all the streets will be revamped. All in all, at the end, it should be a success story despite the shortcomings.

I used to spend time with friends sitting on the edge of the VIA rail viaduct at night (Peel and De la Commune) because it was a great place to observe the skyline, do some photography and just hang out (not on the tracks itself, but there's some concrete steps to sit on). The area was totally dead, which made it easier to access our spot.

We've since lost our view because it's obstructed by towers, but the vibrancy and feel on the ground is already night and day compared to what it was 10 short years ago when the redevelopment began. The newer projects appear to be of increasingly higher quality as well, compared to the first Devimco pieces.
